The 2010 Tour de Coops takes place this Saturday, July 24th from 11am to 3pm.

This is a fun and affordable community event for you, your whole family and all your friends! Chicken owners throughout Portland will open their yards so you can see their coops and meet their chickens.

The Tour de Coops is a self-guided tour; you’ll have the opportunity to visit 25 backyard chicken coops all over East Portland – getting to know your neighbors while learning and sharing urban chicken keeping ideas.

Update: I just received confirmation that Hammy’s Pizza (2114 SE Clinton) is once again this year hosting a pizza eating contest during the street fair – at 1pm Saturday! Visit Hammy’s for details!

The 18th annual Division/Clinton Street Fair and parade takes place Saturday, July 24th, along SE Division and Clinton Streets from 12th through 60th.

The parade begins at 10:45am near SE 50th and Division. The route terminates at SE 28th and Clinton Street.

At 7 Corners (SE 19th and Division) Roots of Our Neighborhood, sponsored by the Hosford-Abernathy Neighborhood Development Association, features music, a neighborhood history exhibit, and activities for kids from 11am until 5pm.

Meanwhile over 80 vendors will be offering food and street fair fare. Multiple music stages feature everything from acoustic klezmer to punk rock (the full lineup is available at the Division Clinton website).

The fair runs from 10am to 5pm, with the street dance at SE 25th and Clinton continuing until 9pm.

The Architectural Heritage Center presents The South Park Blocks: The Evolution of a Portland Neighborhood.

Pioneer Daniel Lownsdale had a visionary plan of a greenway that would extend from Portland’s northwest waterfront to the southwest hills. Unfortunately, his dream never came to fruition and Lownsdale’s park block property was lost to litigation after his death.

During the past 130 years, property facing the South Park Blocks—the area to the south of Salmon Street—has consistently been used for educational, religious, cultural and residential purposes. Grand mansions and smaller residences later became boarding houses. Some of these houses were removed and were replaced by surface parking lots. In some cases these parking lot properties were later redeveloped into housing. Portland State University (PSU) has grown to cover most of the property south of Market Street. PSU has re-purposed many properties, including the former Shattuck Elementary School and Lincoln High School, as part of its expanding campus.

Join Portland author Don Nelson, as he discusses the evolution of the South Park Blocks. The lecture is based on his book The South Park Blocks: A Neighborhood History.

The 30th annual Cathedral Park Jazz Festival takes place July 16th through 18th at Cathedral Park, under the St. Johns Bridge.

Performers this year include Linda Hornbuckle, Lloyd Jones, Thara Memory, and the Bobby Torres Ensemble.

In its 30th year, this is the largest and oldest free jazz and blues festival west of the Mississippi. Portland jazz station, KHMD simulcasts the entire twenty or so hours of the festival, but of course it’s best seen, and listened to live.

The North Portland Pix Patisserie (3901 N Williams) is throwing a Bastille Day Celebration, Saturday, July 17th.

To celebrate the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789 which spurred the French Revolution (and to have a little fun at the same time) Pix is holding a day/night long block party in front of its North Williams location. Come for live music from local bands like Nice Nice and Dirty Mittens, a wine drinking 5K, Champagne sabering demo, dance off, and more. Did I mention the giant Bastille Tower made of cream puffs? Yes, you get to eat it!

Pix will, of course, be offering french pastries. Next door neighbors Fifth Quardrant will be hosting a beer garden, there will also be ice cream, a 60 pound Carlton Farms roasted pig, and a Champagne and Oyster Bar!

The Big Busk 2010 takes place Saturday, July 17th in downtown Portland. What exactly is the Big Busk?

The Big Busk is a new music festival for downtown Portland.

These are the ingredients:

* a deep and diverse pool of creative and talented musicians
* a beautiful, human-friendly downtown that consistently ranks among the most walkable in the nation
* a really crappy economy

The idea is, for an entire afternoon, to saturate downtown with music. All kinds of music. Up and down Broadway, the transit mall, the park blocks to the esplanade.

There is no stage, but every corner is a stage. There is no audience, but everyone is the audience. There is no admission fee, but we trust attendees tip generously.

So it’s kind of an experiment. It’s also kind of an art project and a tongue-in-cheek celebration of creative defiance. Good music for tough times.

The 8th Annual Bastille Day Festival takes place this Saturday, July 10th from noon until 8pm at Jamison Square Park in the Pearl District. Admission is free.

The Fête de la Bastille commemorates the storming of the Bastille Prison on le quatorze juillet, 1789. In Portland we celebrate with the 6th Annual Portland Waiters Race, musical acts, French food and wine and a themed market, pétanque demonstrations and lessons, a singing of La Marseillaise, and a Jardin of Wine and Beer (featuring Kronenbourg beers, Lillet aperitifs, and wines from Georges Duboeuf and W.J. Deautsch, including Mâcon Villages Blanc 2007, Beaujolais Villages 2007; Loire Sauvion Rosé d’Anjou 2007; and Marquis de Perlade).

I made it to this festival a few years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed the Jardin of Wine and Beer. The only problem with this fest is that it’s the same day as the Mississippi Avenue Street Fair. Fortunately Pix Patisserie (3901 D N Williams) also throws a Fête de la Bastille, and has scheduled theirs for July 17th this year – details forthcoming!

Pelada Screens in Portland

Update: Pelada‘s run at Portland’s Hollywood Theater (4122 NE Sandy) has been extended – it will run from Friday, July 23rd – Thursday, July 29th!

Pelada, a film about soccer away from the bright light and manicured field, will be screening in Portland at the Hollywood Theater (4122 NE Sandy) from July 9th through the 16th.

Christopher Clarey writes about the film in the New York Times:

Soccer is ever more the global game, and that is not only because of the expanding reach of the professional variety, with its Messis and Ronaldos and the World Cup finals looming larger on the horizon.

It is global because at any given moment, some group of friends or strangers is chasing a ball across the dirt, grass, sand or cement with no paying public to validate it.

“All over the world there are games you never hear about,” Luke Boughen says in the new film Pelada.

The quest to find and find meaning in those games is the focus of this documentary brimming with energy and optimism that was made by four Americans, three of whom were once collegiate soccer players.
