July 16-18: Unicorns, Jazz, Beer, Busking, Parkways, Bastille Day, Street Fairs and the Timbers

Posted on 14 July 2010

Holy shit there’s a lot to do this weekend! Usually I publish this weekend roundup post on Thursday, but I really think we all need some extra time this week to make our weekend plans. We have multiple beer, music, and street fair events, in addition to a Timbers match and the July Sunday Parkways.

The North Portland Pix Patisserie will, of course, be offering french pastries. Next door neighbors Lompoc will be hosting a beer garden, there will also be ice cream, a 60 pound Carlton Farms roasted pig, and a Champagne and Oyster Bar!

July 9-12: Mississippi Street Fair, NW 23rd Street A-Fair, Bastille Day, and Soccer

Posted on 08 July 2010

A hell of a weekend is in store – summer like weather accompanies Portland’s largest street fair, one of the largest French themed festivals on the West Coast, and soccer up the wazoo – on film, on the world stage, and at PGE Park!

July 10: Bastille Day Festival in the Pearl

Posted on 05 July 2010

The Fête de la Bastille commemorates the storming of the Bastille Prison on le quatorze juillet, 1789. In Portland we celebrate with the 6th Annual Portland Waiters Race, musical acts, French food and wine and a themed market, a Jardin of Wine and Beer, pétanque demonstrations and lessons, and a singing of La Marseillaise.

Bastille Day isn’t really until le quatorze juillet, but this Saturday, July 11th Portland hosts two celebrations at which Portlanders can sip wine and practice French. And don’t worry: both celebrations will have jardins de bière! Celebrate Bastille Day 2009 with the Alliance Française de Portland at Jamison Square Park Saturday from noon to 8:00pm. [...]

Nicolas Batum has a bloc-notes

Posted on 03 March 2009

The best rookie Frenchman in Portland Trailblazer history has a blog (bloc-note? ) for French basketball website, Basket Session.com. In a recent post Batum writes about All-Star weekend. He shares his experience doing color commentary for the Rookie Sophomore game on Canal+, partying with Steve Nash, setting world records, and more. But despite my best [...]

December 6-7: ScanFair, Radical Books, and Holiday Cheer

There are other things to do this weekend in besides drinking beer. The Scandinavian Heritage Foundation‘s 24th Annual ScanFair takes place this weekend at PSU’s Smith Center. Come for the Scandinavian food, crafts, and the 53rd crowning of Oregon’s Lucia Queen of Light. Stay for the Pickled Herring Eating Contest at noon Saturday! The fair [...]

July 12: Mississippi Street Fair and a pair of Fêtes de la Bastille

Posted on 11 July 2008

The Mississippi Ave. Street Fair is the best street fair in Portland. Five blocks of the avenue, from Skidmore to Fremont, will be closed to cars from 10am to 7pm. In place of traffic you’ll find “Live Music, Dance Lessons, Storytelling, Beer & Margarita Gardens, BB’Q Rib Off, Dunk Tank and much more.” And just [...]

Timbers to face the French Champions?

Posted on 16 June 2008

Now I’m only in French 102 (seriously), but [...]

Pardon my québécois

Posted on 26 March 2008

I guess I have to stop with the frog jokes. In college I studied Spanish, Portuguese, and even Hungarian; all more useful to my cultural prejudices and post-college travel plans than French. I never made it to Budapest. Two years ago, however, I did spend a week in Montreal. I fell in love with countless [...]
