Concordia Cup 2010 Wednesday – Sunday

Bailey’s Taproom 3rd Anniversary Barrel Aged BeerFest Saturday

Bones and Brews 2010 Saturday – Sunday

And now on to some other activities . . .

Thursday

Back Fence PDX

The theme of the July 29th, 2010 Back Fence PDX is He Said/She Said:

“Two people will tell the same story from their different POVs. The second person to tell the story will be sequestered so they may not hear how the first person tells it. EXCITING!” [more]

Friday – Sunday

Showdown at Slabtown 2010

The 2nd annual Showdown at Slabtown takes place this Friday through Sunday, July 30th through August 1st, at Slabtown (1033 NW 16th).

In my salad days I was a pretty decent pinball player. My little brother, Steve, however, was a master. We played in the late-90s era Portland Pinball League incarnation at the now defunct Jockey Club on Killingsworth, where Steve racked up a number of championships. I think I placed 3rd or 4th once. [more]

Saturday

Overlook Village Celebration

The 2nd Annual Overlook Village Celebration takes place Saturday, July 31st 2010 on North Killingsworth, West of I-5.

From 11am until 6pm enjoy local art and craft vendors, live local bands, a pet costume contest, a car show, and a sidewalk sale. [more]

Three years ago today this blog was born. Over 1024 posts and 1871 comments later, there’s no end in sight – seems like there’s something interesting going on all the time in Portland, and I have yet to run out of opinions!

Fittingly, the first post was about beer. Later that first week I blogged about the Timbers for the first time. As long time readers know these are recurring themes at Dave Knows Portland.

In the blog’s inaugural year, I averaged 4.9 posts per week. Last year I got that to 5.1, and now it’s up to 6.5. The last few months I’ve averaged close to two posts a day. Visitor traffic is up too, of course, but the frequency of posts is the most interesting statistic to me personally. It’s an indicator of how much I enjoy researching, writing, sharing, and interacting with readers. This blog provides plenty of opportunity for all of these.

So on that note I want to thank you for reading, commenting, and linking – this blog would be rather pointless without you!

Photographer Eric Fischer has assembled maps of over a hundred world cities, including Portland, Oregon, showing locations geotagged by locals and tourists on Flickr and Picasa.

Here’s what Portland looks like, from the set Locals and Tourists:

Blue points on the map are pictures taken by locals (people who have taken pictures in this city dated over a range of a month or more).

Red points are pictures taken by tourists (people who seem to be a local of a different city and who took pictures in this city for less than a month).

Yellow points are pictures where it can’t be determined whether or not the photographer was a tourist (because they haven’t taken pictures anywhere for over a month). They are probably tourists but might just not post many pictures at all.

Check out the Geotaggers’ World Atlas map of Portland too, for undifferentiated geotagged locations.

Listen live on PDX.FM at 8am.

We’re in the midst of Pride Week 2010, so who better to talk to than the woman behind qPDX, Portland’s premier site for queer news, views and events.

Alley is looking forward to it:

I’m really hoping they’ll have one of their infamous drink tastings, seeing as surely I won’t have had enough the night before, nor will I have any the rest of the weekend. Drunk at only my 4th day of the new jobby. Sweet!

As for what we will be discussing, besides the incredibly ambiguous “Pride” is anybody’s guess. Their conversations usually consist of things like exploding cocks, neck brace organizers and bastardizing the English language.

And of course if you can’t listen live, find the recorded show a few hours after the broadcast at MorningSubmission.com and iTunes.

UPDATE: The contest is over; and a winner has been selected. I will announce the winner once I have successfully contacted him or her. Thanks!

On Saturday, July 17th 2010, I’ll be dressed in grey slacks and a long sleeve white shirt, probably sweating in sweltering heat, at an undisclosed location on Sauvie Island; one of my best friends is getting married. I’ve known the guy since first grade. I don’t think I can get out of it

But my obligation is your gain – I have a pair of tickets I can’t use to the Portland Timbers friendly against Manchester City at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland, on the same day.

Merlo Field is tiny, so as you probably already know, tickets to this match are exclusively available to season ticket holders. Behold, I am a full-season ticket holder, and I possess a pair of Game C tickets. And I want to give these two tickets to you.

The mechanics of this contest are simple:

Leave a comment below* before midnight (Portland, Oregon time) on Saturday, June 26th

In the comment tell us who your favorite Portland Timbers player is (a player on the roster as of the date you post your comment)

On Sunday, June 27th I will randomly draw a name from the pool of commenters who followed the rules above

After the drawing I will deliver the tickets to the winner. (Hopefully at a Timbers match before July 17th, but I will Fedex or mail the tickets if necessary.)

* You do not need to use your real name when you comment, but you must leave a valid email address so that I can contact you if you win. I won’t use the email addresses for anything else. Ever. Also, don’t panic (or re-comment obsessively) if your comment does not appear instantly; the first comment per email address goes into moderation. I will try to approve them in a timely manner.

Good luck!

The Portland Timbers lost to Miami Saturday, but the biggest moans and groans (and boos) came at the Timbers MLS crest unveiling at half time of the USA vs. England match viewing at Director Park.

If you’re a Timbers fan, you’re already aware of the controversy. My stance is that yeah, the new crest is crap. Cartoon shadows and that weird pendulous chevron thing? Really?

Most of the MLS logos kinda suck though. Lots of ahistorical or nonsensical team names, and tenuous grasps at traditions elsewhere. The new Timbers logo does at least tip the hat to the team’s history and previous crest. I can imagine far worse results.

That being said, I didn’t expect the Timbers organization to make such a big change. No doubt they will retain the trademarks to the previous Timbers logos, and use them for retro lines of souvenirs and other ephemera (and if they don’t, they ought to license the previous crests to the 107ist for fund raising efforts).

There are some proposals floating around to jettison that silly triangle chevron thing, but keep the cartoony shadow. Interestingly, the team already has something new that, I think, would be far more acceptable to more of the Timbers faithful. Take a look at the image to the right. I did not mock that up; it’s from an image of a Timber scarf for sale on the MLS Gear website.

Anyways.

Here are few other reactions:

And I’m looking forward to today’s Morning Submission broadcast. Expect a good rant . . .

Meanwhile, the Timbers also announced the season ticket prices for 2011. And they seem more reasonable than the crest choice. Check out this nifty virtual venue thing to see the pricing and compare views from different sections.

And tonight, Tuesday, May 15th the Portland Timbers host the Sonoma County Sol in a US Open Cup match. Kickoff is at 7pm. Tickets are cheap.
