This month’s Timbers Army Third Saturday takes place at Hawaiian bar and restaurant Da Hui (6504 SE Foster). Start time is 7:01pm, of course. DJ’s Lampwick and Jackieblu will be supplying the soul and reggae.

This will be the last Third Saturday for a while, but that’s not sad news: the Timbers season kicks off on April 17th!

The first match is on a Saturday, so a tailgate is probably in the cards . . . And there may also be a season opener party on April 16th – more details as I get them . . .

As always, to join the Timbers Army, all you have to do is show up at matches and bleed green and yellow.

But you now have a new opportunity to participate: join the 107 – an Independent Supporters’ Trust.

The 107 Independent Supporters’ Trust is the machinery behind the Timbers Army. It supports soccer in and around Portland, Oregon, from the grass roots to the highest professional level. It fuels the Army and supports soccer charities and soccer events in Soccer City USA.

This new group, conjured up by the fans and established by a core group of hard working Timbers fans, will be involved in planning tifo, bus trips to away matches, and charitable work. The trust is currently pursuing tax-exempt 501(c)(6) status with the IRS.

The 107ist was publicly launched yesterday on the Timbers Army website. The first question addressed in the announcement: What is 107ist?

Much as the atmosphere of a soccer match resembles a college football game, an IST is kind of like an alumni boosters club: hard-core fans who want to have a stake in the team they love.

The second question: Why should I join?

The Timbers won’t be the only ones going to a whole new level in 2011. The Army will have its own sections set aside in the newly remodeled PGE Park. There will be a Timbers Army season ticket that puts you in the center of the bedlam.
In 2011, “the greatest football supporters the world has ever seen” are only going to get stronger, louder and prouder.
A 107ist membership is just $20 a year, with the money going to fund the Timbers Army’s effort in supporting the team and in contributing to soccer-related events and charities. And there’s more, of course!

I’m already a member!

Visit the 107ist website to sign up, and to learn about nitty gritty topics like elections, bylaws, and sundry other details.

Portland Soccer Bars is live!

Two of the most popular posts on Dave Knows Portland are Places to watch English (and world) soccer in Portland, and Italian Soccer Viewing in Portland. The inspiration for Portland Soccer Bars began with them.

With the Timbers season and the 2010 World Cup beginning soon, not to mention the Timbers’ “promotion” to MLS in 2011, new Portland area soccer fans will be coming out of the woodwork. And a lot of them won’t know where to watch matches. Portland Soccer Bars aims to help.

Currently each bar (and cafe and restaurant) listing is organized by name, quadrant, and type of establishment. The site is a work in progress though; more categories will be added (type of food? hours?).

I will update pages for sites as I get more or better information, so please, share your updates and opinions – comments are open on each bar’s listing, and there’s a form on the contact page to submit information about new venues. I imagine this summer, during World Cup, a lot of bars that don’t normally show soccer will be jumping on the bandwagon, if only for a few weeks. Portland Soccer Bars will keep track of them too.

Cheers!

The big news this week: Mike Golub, former Portland Trailblazer Chief Operating Officer, has been hired for the same position with the MLS Timbers.

MLS Timbers hire Mike Golub as Chief Operating Officer at PortlandMLS2011.com

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers today announced the hiring of Mike Golub as the Chief Operating Officer for the team in advance of its debut season in Major League Soccer (MLS). The announcement was made by Timbers President Merritt Paulson. [More]

And in biggish news: Nigerian forward Gabriel Obatola, by way of Singapore, may have signed or may soon be signing a contract with the Timbers . . . or maybe not:

A Singapore website, The Electric New Paper, is reporting that the Timbers have signed 22 year old Nigerian Gabriel Obatola, a former Gombak United striker. The veracity of the report, however, is dubious as the article goes on to state he’s going to be in the MLS and has a two year contract with the Timbers. The latest news is that Gabriel Obatola is perhaps a trialst: The Game has learned that despite reports the Timbers have NOT signed Nigerian F Gabriel Obatola, but he will train with the team next week (via @strongatnight).

And in even more biggish news, new Timbers fan site The Woodwork was launched. Highlighted must-reads this week:

Mike Golub, who was officially announced as the Portland Timbers’ team chief operating officer on Tuesday, had a head start on his job.

Golub, 48, will be in charge of all business operations for the franchise, including marketing, sponsorships, promotions and ticket sales.
Announced Saturday on the SoccerCityUSA.com Message Board, the site, though in its infancy, looks promising. The initial plan is three regular columns, each with a few contributors.

The Sorbet will be critique and commentary. Consider it the editorial page. Ground Level will be focused on the matches themselves. Wooddork is for the lighter side of the sport.

The first column to appear at The Woodwork falls in the Sorbet category. It is penned by none other than Bob Kellett, long time Timbers raconteur. If you’ve been paying attention at all the past 10 years, you’ve come across his erudite and witty commentary. He used to write for the OregonLive Timbers blog (now in the capable hands of Kip Kesgard), more recently he manned the Timbers Offside Blog, and his occasional SoccerCityUSA.com Message Board missives have been educating and entertaining the Timbers faithful for years.

The site is the brainchild of another long time Timbers fan, Bruce Eaton. In addition to Bob and Bruce, expect passages from Dave Hoyt, Laurie Jane, Lucas Grzybowski, Ralph Chilton and others.

Possible performances include, but are not limited to: dance routines, vocal performances, acrobatics, juggling, magic tricks, junkyard percussion and other random talents. We encourage all types of “talents” to audition for a chance to be the next star of PGE Park, although acts should be appropriate for all ages.

The February Timbers Army ‘Third Saturday’ is upon us. The Army will be invading upper Hawthorne, aka The Barmuda Triangle.

We will descend upon upper Hawthorne like alcohol starved locusts ready to decimate SE’s hops and barley crops!

The Barmuda Triangle is between 48th-50th and contains The Space Room, Bar of the Gods, Sewickly’s Addition, Mt. Tabor Pub, Sapphire Hotel, The Water Trough, The Tanker, and if you want to stretch your legs–Angelo’s!

This vortex of inebriation also holds in it’s depth Portland’s only late night Döner Kebabs! Cash only, Brian.

It will all kick off around 7:01 at The Space Room and then with true TA passion we will take control of the entire neighborhood!

Tell your friends, tell your enemies, warn your relatives and bondsmen! Let’s make this the biggest and most memorable Third Saturday ever!!

I would be seeing you all at the The Space Room (4800 SE Hawthorne) . . . if I weren’t going to a Mardi Gras party!
