Go By Street Car in Portland: 1936-1959

Go By Streetcar: Portland Streetcars 1936-1959 from Tom11 Films on Vimeo.

Interesting how little lane markers, right of way, and common courtesy meant to cars back then. Wow. And then they burned the streetcars down.

On the Vimeo page footage is credited to Dan Haneckow of Cafe Unknown.

Dang, the music is wonderful during the early part; but just makes it disconcertingly creepy and depressing at the end.

Love the street cars! Rode them a lot. My dad even “handled” one. Worked for Rose City Transit.

Dave, do you happen to have any info on the “old” Restlawn Hospital that was on SE Foster Rd back in the 30’s and 40’s? My mom worked there and took care of a patient named Henry F Phillips – the Portland business man who invented the Phillip screw and driver..

@Richard – I’m not familiar with Restlawn Hospital, but you might try the various historical archives at the Multnomah County Library, or on their website.

I blogged about Henry Phillips last year: July 7, 1936: Portlander Henry F. Phillips Receives Patent for Eponymous Screwdriver Design.
