Writer Jonathan Bloom is in Portland today to promote his new book: American Wasteland: How America Throws Away Nearly Half of Its Food (and What We Can Do about It).
American Wasteland chronicles how we waste food from farm to fork and examines the impact of our squandering. With an upbeat tone, the book offers suggestions on how we—as a nation and as individuals—can trim our waste. A word of warning: It’s a book that forces you to reconsider your approach to food. Because once you’re looking for food waste, it’s hard to miss.
He will be appearing tonight at Powell’s on Hawthorne (3723 SE Hawthorne) at 7:30pm to discuss and sign copies of his book.
Jonathan blogs about the same topic at Wasted Food. A few years ago he blogged about a visit to Portland’s Reed College, home to an infamous, and arguably virtuous, scrounging culture.

Jonathan, I am currently volunteering for a place that acquires food from Feeding America and the World Food Bank. There is a problem. The people are hoarding the food that they get. They go from line to line and get food from several places. I hear of stock piles in homes of food stuff. I want to investigate. I see the same faces all the time and I have been to several different locations. Is there anything to help combat this?
