July 4, 1976: Battleship Oregon Memorial Dedicated, Time Capsule Placed

July 4, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

A time capsule was placed in the base of the Battleship Oregon Memorial in what is now Tom McCall Waterfront Park on July 4, 1976 (The Oregonian, 5-July-1976).

The Battleship Oregon Memorial Marine Park was officially dedicated in a Navy League sponsored Fourth of July ceremony, complete with a 45-star flag that was part of the old battleship’s history.

And a slice of Oregon life was put into storage as The Oregonian’s time capsule was installed in the mast of the battleship Oregon, which rests in the the middle of the park.

Sealed on the nation’s bicentennial, the capsule is to be opened on the tricentennial, July 5, 2076. The Oregonian was charged with assembling memorabilia, suggested by the public, for inclusion in the time capsule (The Oregonian, 23-June-1976).
