The 28th Annual Apple Tasting Event at Portland Nursery (SE 50th and Stark) takes place over the next two weekends (Friday-Sunday, October 9-11, and 16-18-21, 10 AM to 5 PM each day).
After the Polish Festival and sundry Oktoberfests, this is my favorite fall event. What’s not to like? There’s Apple tasting, old fashioned cider pressing, apple desserts, cooking demonstrations, and live music. Also my wife Heather freakin’ loves apples!
In 2010 Heather and actually tried all of the 65+ varieties of apples and pears (this year’s fest features over 50 varieties) – in previous years the line was too daunting. The key, we learned, is to arrive early before the tasting line gets too long. The same varieties of apples and pears in the tasting are available to take home by the pound.
