October 10: 2009 Fresh Hop Beer Tastival

Posted on 05 October 2009

The Portland installment of this year’s Fresh Hop Beer Tastivals takes place Saturday, October 10th, at Oaks Park. John Foyston explains fresh hop beer in his blog post about the first 2009 Tastival in Hood River last weekend:

Fresh Hop beer is made during the short window of hop harvest every year, with straight-from-the-vine hops. Instead of the usual process of immediately drying and sending baled hop cones to cold storage, the fragile fresh hops are taken straight to the brewery and, in most cases, tossed into a brew that very same day. Fresh hops possess a whole range of aromatics, flavors and resinous textures that are often changed during drying.

The festival runs from noon until 9pm (free Oaks Park Train Rides until 6pm, but alas, other rides will be closed). $5 tasting glass required to taste.

(Visit the Oregon Brewers Guild On Tap blog for information on attending the Friday, October 9th preview of the Tastival. )

Any idea if this is family friendly? I’d expect it to be given the venue, but I’d hate to show up with the kids and find out otherwise.

  2. Dave says:

    Slainte Mhaith – Hmm, I hope not! I kid, I kid! ;-)
Not sure . . . I’ve tweeted @OregonBeer that question; will update when I hear back!

  3. Slainte Mhaith says:

Thanks! I guess I could have taken that very obvious step.

About the kids – yeah, I know. It’s just that my “window of opportunity” is much larger if I can bring the family. In fact, if I can’t bring the kids, I’ll probably be forced to decide between this event and the Brewpublic Brewniversary at Bailey’s Taproom.

  4. Dave says:

Slainte Mhaith – According to ItsPubNight kids are okay in Portland (but not in Eugene next week).
