It’s that time of year again . . . FA Community Shield game Sunday

July 31, 2007 by Dave Leave a Comment

FA Community ShieldThe FA’s Community Shield match is the traditional kick-off to the English football season.

Last year’s Premier League champs take on the FA Cup winner, so this year that means Manchester United and Chelsea FC.

Kells is showing the match, bright and early, at 7am Sunday.

The English Premier League regular season begins Saturday the 11th!

Miser Monday, Tall Boy Tuesday, Wine Wednesday

July 30, 2007 by Dave Leave a Comment

First comes Miser Monday, then between Tall Boy Tuesday and Thirsty Thursday falls Wine Wednesday.

(Almost) every Wednesday the Hotel Vintage Plaza (422 SW Broadway) hosts a “Wine Wednesday” wine tasting. A winery representative conducts the tasting and gives a wine education presentation. Appetizers are provided, usually by the adjacent Pazzo Ristorante. It begins at 6pm (which is conveniently when Pazzo’s happy hour ends).

The cost is only $10 and it’s open to the general public (as well as hotel guests of course). There’s a limited number of spots, so they recommend reservations; you can call the hotel at 503 228 1212.

Below are some specifics about August tastings:

  • Aug. 1st – Bishop Creek
  • Aug. 8th – Natura Wines from Banfi
  • Aug. 15th – Spain in a Day
  • Aug. 22nd – Cottonwood Winery
  • Aug. 29th – Wente Winery

I’ve known about Wine Wednesdays for a while, but haven’t been able to get down there for one yet, but this month I intend to hit a couple.

Bike no-brainer: bike valet parking at PGE Park

July 30, 2007 by Dave Leave a Comment

There’s a post today on the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) blog suggesting bike valet parking at PGE Park.

A couple years ago this very idea came up at BikePortland.org. And festivals and events around town have been providing valet bike parking for years; why not a permanent facility at PGE Park and the Rose Garden?

After reading about valet bike parking at Giants games in San Francisco, and watching a video about it, I’m puzzled as to why the idea hasn’t caught on already in bike-crazy Portland, or why Portland doesn’t have a city ordinance requiring secure bike parking at events or venues of a certain size. Not only would it encourage more bicycle riding, it would also help cut down on bike thefts. A few years ago I recall tickets to Timbers games could be used to board Trimet on game days; another idea I’m surprised has faded away in “green” Portland.

Soccer players: the Far Post’s annual sale starts Thursday

July 30, 2007 by Dave Leave a Comment

Far Post Soccer SupplyFar Post Soccer Supply‘s annual sidewalk sale begins Thursday and runs through the Sunday.

I’ve gone the past few years and found some great deals on shoes, clothing, and soccer paraphernalia.

This year each day of the sale will have a different special (I believe these discounts are in addition to the sale prices):

  • Thursday: 15% off equipment
  • Friday: 15% off apparel (excluding replica)
  • Saturday: 15% off shoes
  • Sunday: 25% off “select” replica jerseys

Sale starts at 10am in the parking lot. The Far Post’s address is 825 S.W. 14th, which is basically the corner of 14th and Taylor.
