More excellent Timbers coverage: A Pretty Move

July 23, 2007 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersThe Timbers are well loved, and well blogged.

Lynda at A Pretty Move posted a great piece this morning on the Timbers’ weekend matches and new Timbers owner Merritt Paulson’s thoughts on bringing MLS to Portland and PGE Park. Here’s an excerpt:

I’ve never had the time to write a proper indictment of the appalling prospect that floated around for a bit about a soccer stadium in Hillsboro, not even within reach of public transportation–which is probably just as well; I’d have ranted about the suburbanization of soccer, the American cult of the automobile, and God knows what else, probably turning red and falling out of my chair from indignation at the end as I marshaled the last of my strength to ill-advisedly hit the “publish” button. But really, PGE Park converted to a soccer-specific stadium is like a dream come true: smack in the middle of downtown, bus and light rail drop you off at the gates, bars and restaurants in the vicinity abound.

I agree 100%. PGE Park is the ideal urban location for a new and improved MLS soccer stadium. The “Piggie” is not only close to public transit, it’s also adjacent to one of Portland’s most densely populated neighborhood.

Dave Knows: Pinball

There’s a new blog in the DaveKnows.org stable: pinball.daveknows.org.

There’s not much there yet, but it’s a beginning. Steve, the man behind the venerable PortlandPinball.com, is my co-blogger. Anything pinball related is fair game: new machines, leagues, news items, tips, and whatever else we can think of. Stop by and take a look!

Who Ate All the Cupcakes on the Timbers vs. Atlanta match

July 22, 2007 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersLongshoe at the entertaining Atlanta-area soccer blog Who Ate All the Cupcakes (not to be confused with the self-proclaimed “best football blog on the planet” Who Ate All the Pies*) has posted thoughts on
Saturday’s match
in Atlanta between the Timbers and the Atlanta Silverbacks. Here are some highlights:

  • I was really impressed with the Timbers. They beat Vancouver on the West Coast on Thursday night, and didn’t look worn down last night after the cross country flight. Will they have anything left for Charleston today? They were also missing their leading scorer Andrew Gregor due to yellow card accumulation. The Timbers have now won seven in a row.
  • Portland might have the best defense in the league. They now have ten shutouts on the year. They kept the quality scoring chances to a minimum. Rios had the best chance on a nice layoff from Antoniuk, but the Portland back-up keeper stoned the 1v1 attempt.

July 26-29: Brew fest, Timbers, and a street fair

July 22, 2007 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

It’s not the busiest weekend of the summer, but it’s pretty close:

Thursday-Sunday

Oregon Brewers FestivalReally, the weekend begins Thursday, when the Oregon Brewers Festival kicks off at 11am with the Brewers Festival Opening Parade. Here are my tips on getting the most out of brewfest (from a previous post):

If you prefer drinking beer to standing in lines in ridiculously hot weather, get there early in the day. Taps open at noon so you should start drinking at noon. Arrive at least before 5pm on Thursday or Friday. If you can’t get to the festival by early afternoon on Saturday or Sunday I wouldn’t bother; a few blocks away at the Yamhill Pub the Pabst is only $1 all day Sunday!

TimbersThen at 7pm the Timbers take on the Atlanta Silverbacks at PGE Park on another Thirsty Thursday. Portland beat league points-leader Daniel Antoniuk (a former Timber) and the solid Atlanta Silverbacks (7-7-4) 1-0 in Atlanta Saturday. Thursday the Silverbacks will be wanting revenge. Last week’s Thursday match against Vancouver brought in 7,123 fans; expect another good crowd this week.

Saturday

Head on out to close-in SE to enjoy walking in the street at the Division/Clinton Street Fair (hat tip to Lesley for bringing this event to my attention). I’ve not been to this one before, but I’m pretty sure there will be beer and I’m pretty sure I’ll be there.

Timbers vs Preston North EndAnd then a bunch of Brits (actually looks like most of them are Irish or Scottish) battle the Timbers at PGE Park at 7pm. Make sure to check out the Soccer City USA Message Board to learn all the latest songs, chants, and insults.

Harry Potter free zone; some books for the rest of us

Can I be the only one not obsessed with all things Harry Potter? For those of you who got your fill of children’s books when you were children, here are a couple Portland-related books I recommend you read while all your friends enjoy making J. K. Rowling even richer.

(If you *must* read fantasy, at least read something good like anything by local legend Ursula K. Le Guin. Her books: Library | Powell’s)

City of Readers: a Book Lover’s Guide to Portland by Gabriel Boehmer

City of ReadersThis little book is brimming with information for Rose City readers; best places to read, local authors, bookstores, libraries, volunteering, and even “Twenty-five ways to sustain and improve Portland’s literary quality of life”.

The book has a website: www.cityofreaders.com

Red Hot and Rollin’: A Retrospection of the Portland Trail Blazers’ 1976-77 Championship Season Edited by Matt Love

Red Hot and RollinListening to late-70s Blazer games with my dad is one of my fondest kindergarten-aged memories. Bill Shonely’s bouyant and booming voice marvelously survived the tinny radio on the window sill above the kitchen sink. Anyone who similarly reminisces about the Blazers of that era will adore this book. It consists of photographs and accounts, by various writers and hangers on, of the epic season. Those who weren’t here in 1977 should read this book to get an inkling of how “Rip City made us lose our minds,” if only to prepare for a repeat in the next few years (I’m an eternal optimist).
