September 21-23: Just your typical weekend – beer, dogs in lederhosen, pirates, Timbers

Friday-Sunday

Oaks Park OktoberfestThe Oaks Park Oktoberfest begins Friday. This is one of my favorite local festivals and it’s not just because of the plentiful beer and women in dirndls (though that’s a large part of it):

Portland’s premier fall festival celebrates the season with a family style German festival. Authentic food, beer, live oompah music on 2 stages, “Kinderplatz” crafts and shows for the kids, dog shows, cooking shows, craft vendors and more.

It’s cheap too: $5.00 for 16-61 years old, $2.00 for 15 and younger, $3.00 for 62 and older. Free gate fee for all visitors 55 and over Friday afternoon from 3-6 pm. The schedule is broken down by day on the Oaks Park website:

  • Friday
  • Saturday
  • Sunday

Saturday

DogtoberfestI don’t know for sure if there will be dogs in lederhosen, but they do call it Dogtoberfest.

Bring your dog to the Hawthorne Lucky Lab Saturday for a dog wash ($5 suggested donation, all proceeds go to DoveLewis Blood Bank). Then stay for the music, beer (Dogtoberfest Pale Ale brewed especially for this occasion), and street fair!

Saturday-Sunday

Pirate FestivalCathedral Park hosts the Second Annual Portland Pirate Festival all weekend.

Explore tall ships, celebrate buccaneer music, and thrill to cannon and sword fighting demonstrations at Portland’s newest family festival . . . This year’s two-day adventure will feature even more music, dance, historical reenactments, and other performances. Fine grub & grog from some of the region’s best restaurants too!

Sunday

TimbersAnd what better way to end the weekend then to watch the Timbers take on Atlanta at PGE Park! The semifinal match begins at 5pm.

Stay tuned to Talk Timbers for tifo and pre-match tailgating plans.

Timbers reach semifinals, get written about

TimbersNo surprise, there’s been more coverage of the Timbers lately. My plan is to track it all down . . .

Eleven Devils: A Football Blog – ONWARD YE TIMBERS!

A very nice moment on a good afternoon of (s)crappy, edgy, ragged-in-a-good-way United Soccer Leagues First Division playoff action—a perfect day for football, from the cup-tie atmosphere to the gray, cool Englandy skies.

Some true class from a Whitecaps fan:

Whitecapsfanblog – Congratulations Portland Timbers

Furthermore the Timbers keep tradition alive with their colors and their logo, not like the Seattle Sounders who come up with a new disaster each year to pull over their sorry selves.

The other reason I like the Timbers is because we share a common enemy: the Seattle Sounders.

I hope the Timbers take it all this year. Good luck to them…

We don’t discriminate against audio either:

the107report’s TimbersCast – The 107 Report September 17, 2007

Post-match interviews after the triumphant Portland Timbers move past Vancouver 3-1 aggregate. Interviews with Josh Wicks, Andrew Gregor, Jaime Ambriz and Gavin Wilkinson. Music by Freedy Johnston and Elvis Costello and the Attractions.

Meanwhile Kiki Lara kicks some community ass!:

Portland Timbers Website – Lara honored as Community Player of the Year

In 2007, Lara most exemplified the goals of the Timbers Community Outreach Program by making a positive impact on community values by lending his time and energy to a number of causes and philanthropic activities throughout the season.

Bickle's PhotosAnd last, but not least, check out Bickle’s photos of the match and pre and post-match festivities (make sure to read the captions too . . . they amuse): The 107 Report September 17, 2007

More Timbers kudos from The Offside Rules

The Offside RulesOne of the best American soccer blogs out there is The Offside Rules. And I’m not just saying that because they love the Timbers Army:

The Offside Rules – I’ve Sided With Portland and There is NOTHING You or Seattle Can Do About It

I’ve never declared myself a fan of any one USL club but I have to say the beautiful bunch of noisy freaks that make up section 107 in PGE Park have got me ready to claim Portland as my side of choice. Those guys valiantly do the seemingly impossible job of making a baseball stadium with turf that is as consistently hard as Ron Jeremy feel like it was made for the game. If any of you read this, I salute you and would love drink some form of brown liquor (Ron Burgundy and I love scotch) with you all some time.

On to the semifinals!

TimbersThe Timbers Army knocked the dust off the giant green and yellow flag last night, as The Timbers finally located their offense. The Timbers treated Vancouver like the 7th seed they were and dominated in a 3-0 dust up at PGE Park.

Justin Thompson, Gregor, and Jaime Ambriz each earned a slice of Timber Jim’s log and Wicks earned his gazillionth shutout of the season.

As usual, The Timber Mill has the best game report complete with photos: White-out! Timbers’ three-goal burst puts them through to the semi-finals

Other coverage:

The Oregonian – Timbers snowball the Whitecaps to advance

Minutes before kickoff Sunday afternoon, defender Leonard Griffin – normally one of the team’s most laid back players — chest bumped fellow back line teammate Cameron Knowles during the team huddle. Taking the field, several players leaped into the air.

The Columbian – Timbers finish off Vancouver with 3-0 win

“We’ve had an inner belief that there’s something special here all year,” Thompson said. “Gavin Wilkinson talks a lot about character, and these are the kinds of games where you need to show that. I think it was a complete performance.”

Portland Timbers Website – Timbers advance in playoffs with win over Vancouver

Midfielder Andrew Gregor scored the series-deciding goal as the Portland Timbers defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 in front of 8,522 fans at PGE Park on Sunday night. With the win, the Timbers advance in the USL First Division playoffs with a 3-1 aggregate win over the defending-champion Whitecaps.

And the winner of the succinct-headline award (though the article is rather stupid and basically blames the Whitecap loss on the PGE Park surface):

The Vancouver Sun – Whitecaps’ season over

PGE Park may have the worst playing surface in the United Soccer Leagues First Division, but it suited the hometown Portland Timbers just fine Sunday night.

El Grito y Fiestas Patrias at Pioneer Square

September 15, 2007 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Update: For 2011 information go here: El Grito y Fiestas Patrias 2011

El Grito y Fiestas Patrias 2007 started Friday (I don’t know how I missed this one – I even walked by Pioneer Square Thursday and made a note to myself to find out what was being set up), but it runs through Sunday.

Entry is free, and there will be food vendors, but it wouldn’t be a fiesta without music and dance, and there’s plenty of that:

The weekend-long fiesta will feature musical and dance performances by a wide variety of performers, from the pop-cumbia sounds of La Conquista to Aztec dancing by Grupo Huitzilin to “rock en español” by local bands Beat and Grupo Gérmenes. Other performers include Ballet Papalotl, Grupo Candente, Grupo Antifaz, Mariachi Gallos de América, Mariachi Viva México, La Perlita de México, Enemigos del Silencio, and Ramsey y los Montunos.
