More Tuesday Timbers Tidbits

TimbersThe more success the Timbers have, the easier it is to find bloggage (and podcastage):

Ax to the Head – Well, that sucked . . .

I can assure you that I’m working RIGHT NOW to make sure we have uninterupted coverage of the first leg playoff match on Friday. Andy Mac will be there, as will Aaron Heinzen.

Guest on Tap – Grist for Goals
I highly recommend this article by beer scribe, and Timbers Army stalwart, Abram Goldman-Armstrong. The piece provides useful descriptions and elucidates the pedigrees of the numerous local beers inspired by and crafted for the Timbers and the fans. Here’s the intro:

Just as Portlanders are passionate about their pints, they love the Timbers football club (that’s soccer to you, mate). Year after year, the rowdy fans of the Timbers Army pack the north end of PGE Park and sing till their throats are cracked and sore.

Some end of season ramblings. No interviews. Stats and prognostications. Music by Talking Heads.

A weekend Timbers sandwich

September 10, 2007 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersPortland’s first playoff match is at Vancouver Friday night so come watch the battle at Slabtown via a crappy internet feed blown up onto a big screen so you can really see the lack of quality.

Despite this deficiency you can still make out the Mighty Mighty Timbers and it’s a blast. Slabtown has pinball, ping pong, cold beer, and a certain under-the-highway je ne sais quoi. Combine that with the Timbers Army joie de vivre and you’ve got a party. Match starts at 7, happy hour at 4.

Conclude the weekend Sunday with the Timbers too, as they return home to face Vancouver at 5pm (whichever team accumulates the most goals after the two games advances). Tailgate begins several hours earlier at the parking lot behind the Bullpen. There will be a crapton of orzo salad, an astounding amount of plastic cups, and everything else your heart desires.

A couple of my favorite food blogs: Portland Hamburgers and Le Mange la Ville

Portland Hamburgers

I’ve become a regular reader of Portland Hamburgers, which provides random reviews of Portland Oregon hamburgers, vegi-burgers, and vegan burgers too. Not so much reviews but a cornucopia of consumption.

I don’t even really like hamburgers (I know, blasphemous!), but the great photos, range of topics (you’d be surprised how many sundry topics can fall into the hamburger category), and wit of the reviews and observations make the Portland Hamburger blog one of my favorites.

One thing I don’t get though, is why anyone would order a hamburger at Mexican restaurants?!

Je Mange la Ville

“I eat the city” is a blog about Cooking. Snacks. Portland. Occasionally, cats.

Mercifully cats come up very seldom.

Mostly the blog features recipes, with instructive and enticing photographs and narratives. I made the recently blogged Provençal Oven-Roasted Tomato Sauce, and it was fantastic. I followed Je Mange la Ville’s lead and served it with gnocchi. Unlike Je Mange la Ville I had no leftovers to freeze.

The Tasty Halibut Dish looks good too, and so far Je Mange la Ville is batting a thousand . . .

The sawdust has settled: Timbers face Vancouver in first round

September 9, 2007 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersThe Timbers tied Vancouver 0-0 in the regular season finale Sunday night to finish 2nd in the USL First Division, a remarkable accomplishment for a team that finished in last place a year ago.

The first round playoff schedule is set: the Timbers prepare now for another match at Vancouver, Friday at 7:30pm. The second game is 5pm Sunday in Portland and will also be shown on Fox Soccer Channel.

The Timber Mill and Portland Timbers website have all the details.

See 15000+ (that’s my prediction at least) of you next Sunday at PGE Park!

How could I have forgotten Hempstalk?

Hempstalk 2007My weekly coming-up-this-weekend post had a glaring omission: Hempstalk 2007.

Don’t Procrastinate. Legalize, Regulate & Educate is the mission of the festival, which is being presented by The Hemp & Cannabis Foundation.

Tommy Chong headlines. There will be music, vendors, and speakers.

The festival will be held at the Sellwood Riverfront Park both Saturday and Sunday, September 8th and 9th. (If you take the Springwater Trail from downtown, you’ll hit the big grassy park just after Oaks Park and just before the Sellwood Bridge.)

The festival also has a MySpace page with more information, and the Campaign for the Restoration and Regulation of Hemp (CRRH) hosts a festival page as well.
