Please stop for the pedestrian

June 11, 2008 by Dave Knows 15 Comments

Many times I’ve gently mentioned to the driver of a car I’m a passenger in that the pedestrian attempting to cross the street at the corner ahead of us, despite the lack of a marked crosswalk or stop sign, has the right of way. And almost as often time I’m scoffed at by the driver, who insists that my assertion is nonsense. Perhaps this makes me a self-righteous pedant and backseat driver, but it also demonstrates the ignorance of many drivers.

Sharon White, the Portland Office of Transportation‘s traffic safety program specialist, explains the crosswalk rules of the road in an article in the Tribune today:

  • Every intersection is considered a crosswalk, White says, even those that are unmarked. Stoplights and stop signs take precedence. But if it’s an intersection with neither of those and a pedestrian steps into the street to cross, he or she has the right of way.
  • Bicyclists are required to follow the same rules of the road as motorists, which means they need to yield the right of way to pedestrians at crosswalks just as automobile drivers do. And if they’re caught in one of the crosswalk enforcement operations, they do get ticketed.
  • As for pedestrians, it isn’t enough to stand on the sidewalk looking longingly at the other side of the street. Pedestrians need to show intent to cross, White says. And they do that by taking at least one step into the crosswalk. Also, pedestrians must provide drivers adequate distance to stop, White says.

I’ve often wondered if ignorance of these laws might be partially remedied by an educational campaign like those used by the buckle-your-seatbelt and the anti-drunk-driving people; e.g. billboards, television commercials, and a back-to-school special.

Slugs and boxed wine: How I spent my Grand Floral Parade weekend

June 10, 2008 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

Spruce Run mapCamping close to town with no reservations was no problem. In fact no more than 3 of the 30+ campsites at Henry Rierson Spruce Run Campground were occupied all weekend. The rain, the Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade, and Fleet Week were all going on in Portland. These are all good reasons to get out of town, though the rain followed us.

Mile73.comDespite the weather, we enjoyed the trip and really enjoyed the shower when we got home Sunday. To read all about the rain and the boxed wine visit Heather’s Mile73.com and read A Quarter Tank of $4.49 Gas: Chapter Seven.

The Oregon Brewers Guild reminds us why we rock

June 5, 2008 by Dave Knows 7 Comments

The Oregon Brewers Guild has a new website. One of the new features is On Tap: the OBG Blog. Judging from the nascent posts (first post was on May 31st, 2008), it looks to be the One Stop Shopping place for Oregon beer news, events, and factoids; the Fred Meyers of Beer Blogs, as it were.

The most recent post reminds us that Portlanders of the present day are lucky bastards, even if we do drink way too much Pabst. A few facts:

  • There are currently 63 brewing companies, operating 88 brewing facilities in Oregon. Of the 63 brewing companies, 59 are members of the Oregon Brewers Guild.1
  • There are 30 breweries operating within the Portland city limits, more than any other city in the world.1
  • The Portland metro area boasts 38 breweries, more than any other metro area in the world. 1
  • The Portland metro area is the largest craft brewing market in the United States(U.S.) Even though Portland ranks 23rd in population for Metro areas in the U.S.8

A savvy Portlander’s Rose Festival tips

June 4, 2008 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Rose Festival LogoThe Grand Floral Parade is this Saturday. I would like to share with you a few tips on how to get the most out of your Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade weekend:

Tip 1: Get out of town

I’m going camping, rain or shine.

The Dragon Boat Race is this weekend too however; I recommend checking it out. (Well, my mom’s on a team so I’m obligated to say this.)

Tip 2: Avoid downtown

If you are unable to get out of town, I recommend avoiding downtown and don’t try to cross the river, as the draw bridges will be going up and down and up and down: Fleet Week begins tomorrow and runs through the weekend

US Navy and Coast Guard, Canadian Maritime Forces, and a couple tall sailing and other historic ships will be parking mooring? berthing? docking? parking along the waterfront.

Tip #3: Do not get in a drinking contest with members of the Canadian Maritime Forces

The good news is that after this weekend, the Rose Festival is over, the rain starts to taper off, and summer really begins.
