The LA Times Visits the Food Carts of Portland

November 21, 2009 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

LAtimesPortland’s flourishing food cart scene is now drawing the attention of the LA Times.

Katherine Tulich writes, in Portland’s food carts a winning stop:

It’s like walking into someone’s backyard barbecue. There are groups of people standing and chatting, while others are sitting and eating at makeshift picnic tables. Haphazardly strung lights give the scene a festive atmosphere. But this isn’t someone’s private party; it’s a gathering of food carts in Portland.

She visits several of the standbys; Potato Champion, Whiffies, Spella Caffè, Ziba’s Pitas (one of my favorites), and Brunch Box, and relative new comer Addy’s Sandwich Bar.

Recently opened Mississippi Marketplace gets a mentions, along with Nuevo Mexico, and new German pub Prost, which though not a food cart, permits patrons to enjoy food cart entrees with their imported beers.

Accompanying the article is a photo gallery of Portland food carts, and details about the carts featured in the article.

And of course, the pioneering Portland Food Carts site gets a well deserved nod too.

The Decemberists drink home brew

A recent episode of the show Embedded features footage of The Decemberists filmed in Portland before they embarked upon The Hazards of Love tour last year.

(The Decemberists are my girlfriend‘s favorite band – she calls Colin Meloy her other boyfriend.)

In a moment of downtime between rehearsals, the band gathers on a patio and enjoys a few bottles of pale ale home brewed by bassist Nate Query.

Gordon sees Galaxy come full circle by Larry Morgan / MLSnet.com Staff

Gordon, who joined the Galaxy in August of 2004 after a stint with the USL’s Portland Timbers and is the longest-tenured player on the roster, was there when they won their second championship in 2005. He also was there when the club sank to its lowest depths in 2008, when it tied for the worst record in MLS. He was there when the arrival of David Beckham touched off a circus-like atmosphere and he was there through three general managers and several head coaches, including two on an interim basis. Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour Returns to Portland

November 19, 2009 by Dave Knows 19 Comments

Farrell'sAnother generation of parents can soon terrify its children at Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour.

According to KPTV, Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour is returning to Portland.

There’s no timeline yet, other than “as soon as possible.”

The first Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour opened in Portland in 1963, followed quickly by numerous franchises (58 by 1970). The heyday of the chain lasted through the 70s and into the early 80s. (You can read the whole story here.) A new Farrell’s recently opened in Mission Viejo, California.

Alas, as I’ve written before, I don’t have particularly fond memories of Farrell’s:

In the 70s and early 80s in Portland, if you were a parent with a sensitive child who didn’t like to be the center of attention, Farrell’s was the place to bring him on his birthday to thoroughly embarrass and humiliate him.

Bright lights, banging drums, sickening quantities of ice cream, and teenagers disguised as members of a barbershop quartet: a recurring nightmare and also my childhood memory of Farrell’s.
