Celebrate Norway’s Constitution Day today with the Portland’s Grieg Lodge Sons of Norway at the Norse Hall (111 NE 11th).

May Seventeenth, “Syttende Mai” (set-na-my), is Norway’s most important holiday. On this date in 1814, with the signing of the Norwegian Constitution, Norway was declared an independent country.

Admission to the celebration is free. Before and after the parade visit the Oslo Lounge, inside the Norse Hall, for authentic Norwegian food, music and dance performances, other activities. Visit the Norse Hall website for more information.

May 17: The Free Box FUNdraising Party

The Free BoxOn Monday, May 17th at 8pm, you can help fund more episodes of The Free Box, a very funny locally produced web series. The Free Box FUNraising Party is taking place at The Radio Room (1101 NE Alberta):

Monday, May 17th might just be the most FUN you can have on a Monday. Film, Stand up comedy from Richard Bain. Live music from My goodness. Come show your support, hang out, drink, laugh, dance, and see what The Free Box is up to. It’s free but donations are always awesome to help us fund more Free Box fun. We have put the FUN in Fundraiser! (yeah its cheesy, but true) Hope to see you all there.

In its third season, the show stars Drew Hicks, Cassie Skauge, Garrett Ritchie, Robert J. Olin, and the, uh, energetic Jeremiah Benjamin. Drew Hicks co-created and writes the show with John Meyer. (Will Radik had a good review of the show on Blogtown last year.)

You can also help out by donating through the Kickstarter site. The more you pledge, the more benefits your receive (e.g. a $50 pledge gets you a season 1 DVD, a ‘What Would Gene Do’ bracelet, a post card signed by the cast, and a ‘We Ran Out of Dish Soap’ sticker. A $5000 pledge gets you all that, plus producer credits for the entire season 4, and lots more!).

Here’s a peak – this is Episode 21 – Naked Chicks, the first episode of the third season:

Alberta Art Hop 2010

May 16, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

The theme of the 11th annual Alberta Art Hop was ABC: Art Builds Community. From 11am to 6pm yesterday 15 blocks of NE Alberta were closed to car traffic and filled instead with more than 150 artists, craftspeople, music, dance and theater performances.

Art on Alberta

The Hop is organized each year by Art on Alberta:

Art on Alberta was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2000 to meet the cultural and coordination needs of the arts-related organizations emerging on Portland’s NE Alberta Street.

Like last year, the weather was fantastic. Heather and I trekked out to Alberta in the early afternoon to enjoy the event (though we spent most of our time at the Alleyway Cafe with friends enjoying a beer). Here are some of the things we saw . . .

Popsicles from a street car!

AC St. Louis is an expansion team in the NASL this year, and are having a tough time of it so far. They are 1-5-0 on the season, with one of those losses being the 3-0 defeat by the Timbers last month. The Timbers are 3-1-1 on the season.

A Portland-related iPhone App Roundup

May 14, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Morganica.comCynthia Morgan is a technologist, a glassist, a sculptor and a writer. She writes about all of these things and more at her blog, appropriately called Cynthia Morgan: My Life, My Glass . . . and other things.

In a recent post she assembled a fairly comprehensive list of Portland related iPhone applications, with her reviews:

iPhone gets downright neighborly.

We’ve been so busy using smartphones to weave ourselves into the virtual community, we may not have noticed that the real world has quietly joined the party. Local apps are quickly becoming some of the most realtime, on-the-ground useful of all.

Glassland (AKA Portland) is well-known as a mobile town and has a rich inventory of local apps, but I’d be willing to bet your town (or at least your state) has at least a few of its own.

I found it quite handy. She groups the app descriptions and reviews into categories: Civic Apps, Transportation, Businesses, Food & Fun, and Other Stuff. Some of my favorite apps, like the Portland Pinball Map App, and transit related apps are reviewed (as well as quite a few I’d never heard of or have no interest in). Visit her site for the reviews!
