Brewing Up Cocktails 2 (13-November-2010)

November 8, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Brewing up Cocktails 2Brewing Up Cocktails 2 takes place Saturday, November 13 2010 at The Hop & Vine (914 N Killingsworth) from 6pm until 10pm.

The brainchild of Ezra Johnson-Greenough of the New School beer blog, Portland celebrity mixologist and writer Jacob Grier, and Yetta Vorobik, owner of the Hop & Vine, the second installment of Brewing up Cocktails aims to be a spirited event exploring craft beers as interesting and relatively unexplored ingredient for combining with spirits to create something truly unique.

Due to a birthday trip to Astoria I missed the media preview last Friday, but truly, I am intrigued, and hope to make it to the event on Saturday. Yesterday, Ezra Johnson-Greenough began a daily series of posts at the New School on some of the beer cocktails to be featured at the event next Saturday. First up: The Lovers Quarrel.

The super dry and fruity tartness of Luciernaga [by Jolly Pumkin] with the added lemon-pepper quality of the Coriander lends this beer well to a smooth botanical gin and a bit of the ever popular St. Germaine, a liqueur made with elder flower blossoms and then just a touch of added lemon juice to really bring out the citric tartness of the beer and finally the secret ingredient: a dash of cayenne pepper that really brings this drink the edge it needs and is where the name Lovers Quarrel comes from. The interplay of the spicy heat of the chiles and pepper qualities with the cool and refreshing fruit and citrus acidicness they play off of each other beautifully I must say for a thirst-quenching cocktail that may well be my favorite of the lineup.

Other cocktails to look forward to include a NW Wassail based on Deschutes Brewing‘s Jubelale, a rum and hard cider concoction called the Tea Party, and the Hot Scotchy which features Upright Brewing wort and scotch!

The public are invited to Brewing up Cocktails 2. Drinks will be individually priced.

A Portlander Brews in Shanghai

Michael Jordan, a man from Spokane, not the basketball player, lived in Portland and worked for the new defunct Nor’Wester Brewing Company. In an interview with SmartShanghai.com, he explains:

In 1995 I had part time classes in university and began working in a microbrewery in Portland called Nor’Wester Brewing Company. I began in the packaging (bottling) department and eventually was trained to do everything in the brewery. That was the start of my brewing career and I have enjoyed it enough to make it my lifelong profession.

Before accepting a position at Boxing Cat Brewery in Shanghai, Michael Jordan had been brewing in Denmark the last two years. According to his LinkedIn profile he also brewed at Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland, and Grand Teton and Coeur d’Alene Brewing in Idaho. The job opening in China struck him as a unique and exciting opportunity.

Re-Building South Portland (9-November-2010)

November 7, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

South PortlandRe-Building South Portland, a rare free event from the Architectural Heritage Center, takes place Tuesday, November 9 2010 at the Church of All Nations (136 SW Meade), from 7pm until 9pm.

In conjunction with our new AHC exibit, Re-Building South Portland, please join us in the South Portland neighborhood, as PSU Professor Carl Abbott leads a discussion on the growth, destruction, and re-birth of South Portland. Dr. Abbott will give a short lecture on the neighborhood followed by what should prove to be a lively discussion with area residents and anyone curious about South Portland, its history and the effects of urban renewal.

South Portland was an immigrant neighborhood with clusters of Italian-Americans and Jewish immigrants from Poland and Russia, which was mostly destroyed by urban renewal and freeway building after World War II. Carl Abbott is the author of one of my favorite books about Portland, Greater Portland: Urban Life and Landscape in the Pacific Northwest (Metropolitan Portraits).
