Oregonian Headline 9-March-1975The stockholders of Portland’s nascent North American Soccer League franchise selected the team name Timbers on March 8, 1975 (Source: The Sunday Oregonian, 9-March-1975).

The name was chosen from over 3000 submitted entries. Pioneers, with 157, had the most entries, but was rejected since Lewis and Clark College already used the name for its athletic teams. Some of the other finalists included Trappers, RainDrops, Stealheaders, Oregonians, and Volcanos. The Timbers name was submitted 12 times.

Below is a copy of the entry form that appeared in The Oregonian from February 23rd through the 25th, 1975.

Timbers Army March 11th Celebration (11-March-2011)

March 7, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Timbers ArmyCelebrate the end of the offseason and March 11th this Friday with the Timbers Army at Blitz Ladd (2239 SE 11th).

Why March 11?

On March 11, 2009, the Portland City Council approved the deal to renovate PGE Park, paving the way for us to get the 18th MLS franchise.

On March 11, 2010, we beat the Flounders 1-0 in Seattle thanks to the juice that we all love.

With March 11, 2011 fast approaching, there’s no better date to celebrate our imminent entry into MLS and say au revoir to those TA who will be boarding planes the next week for Denver.

Festivities begin at 7:01pm. Show your 107ist card and get 10% off your total bill even during happy hour. For more information and to RSVP visit the Facebook event page.

Enchanted Forest 2011

March 7, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Enchanted Forest MapThe Enchanted Forest opens for the 2011 season on Thursday, March 17.

Until last July I hadn’t traipsed down Storybook Lane since the early 80s. Heather had never stumbled through the crooked house nor witnessed the giant warts on the concrete witch’s nose, so as a birthday treat we spent a magical day at the happiest place on the I-5 corridor just south of Salem, Oregon. Afterward she declared:

If you live in Oregon and you haven’t been to Enchanted Forest, you need to go. If you haven’t been in a long time, go back. And if you have kids, Enchanted Forest will rock their world. You’d be a total ass not to bring your kids here as soon as possible.

The park opens at 10am, and rides and the Haunted House open at 10:30. Closing time varies, and for part of the season the park is only open on weekends, so before you jump in the car make sure to check the park schedule on the website. Ticket prices vary with age and ride options. There are food vendors but the Enchanted Forest welcomes picnics (no BBQs or alcohol though).

March 7, 2001: Portland Trailblazers Retire Clyde Drexler’s Number

March 7, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

BlazersLargerClyde “The Glide” Drexler entertained Portland Trailblazer fans with his acrobatic flair and scoring prowess from 1983 until he moved on to his hometown Houston Rockets in 1995.

With Houston Clyde promptly won an NBA championship, something he couldn’t quite pull off in Portland, though the team made it to the NBA finals in 1990 and 1992. Other Portland greats on the two finals teams were Terry Porter, Buck Williams, Jerome Kersey, Cliff Robinson, and the late Kevin Duckworth.

Clyde Drexler retired from the NBA in 1998. On March 7, 2001 his number, 22, was retired during a ceremony at the Rose Garden Arena.

He now works as the color commentator for the Rockets.
