Poutine Challenge at The Original

The Original: A Dinerant (300 SW 6th), local purveyor of fine poutine (breakfast version too!), presents the Poutine Challenge:

With a fanfare of trumpets and tympanic rolls, The Original invites Portland’s dining public to take The Poutine Challenge.

The goal is to fully eat five full pounds of French fried potatoes, cheese curds and brown gravy. And you have just 30 minutes to clean your plate.

Think your appetite is up to the challenge? If you complete the challenge you earn bragging rights and a commemorative t-shirt, and your poutine is free! If you fail the challenge, you can still claim bragging rights of a sort, but you have to pony up $39.95.

Visit The Original blot for more information, including waiver form details . . .

April 9, 1910: First Successful Flight of an All-Oregon-Built Plane

April 9, 2011 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

John Conner Burkhart made the first successful flight of an all-Oregon-built airplane on April 9, 1910 (The Oregonian, 10-April-1910).

After suffering mishaps in recent trials which prevented him from getting a good start, John C. Burkhart, of Portland, got away for five successful flights with his biplane airship this afternoon.
On every test the machine rose perfectly and covered from 100 to 220 yards each trial until Burkhart brought it to earth, alighting easily without a jar.

The biplane airship was built by the pilot and W.C. Crawford during the winter of 1909 and 1910 and had been exhibited at an automobile show at the Portland Armory that same year (The Oregonian, 21-January-1951). The historic flight took place at Albany’s Goltra field, the Northwest’s first airport, which was established by Mr. Burkhart and his cousin Del Burkhart in 1909 (Your guide to Historic Albany, Oregon – pdf).

April 8, 1977: Portland Trail Blazers Sellout String Begins

Blazers If one could pinpoint the onset of Blazermania, an argument could be made for the second to last regular season game of the 1976-1977 season.

On April 8, 1977, the Trail Blazers faced the Phoenix Suns at the Memorial Coliseum in front of a sell out crowd, defeating the Suns 122-111. That sellout, the 17th of the season, marked the beginning of an 18 year long string of sellouts, which didn’t end until November 20, 1995.

Of course 1977 was the year of a healthy Bill Walton and an amazing Portland Trail Blazers team that went on to win the franchise’s only NBA championship. Portland is a small market team that could.
