April 20, 1825: David Douglas Arrives at Fort Vancouver

April 20, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

David DouglasYoung Scottish botanist David Douglas, having done impressive work in England and the Northeastern U.S.A, was sponsored by the Hudson’s Bay Company to collect and chronicle specimens in the Oregon Country (aka Columbia).

On April 20, 1825 he arrived at Fort Vancouver. The rest of the year he made short trips up and down the Columbia, Willamette, Chehalis, and Cowlitz rivers and along the Washington coast, observing and collecting plants, preserving a few animal specimens, and collecting geological samples. In 1826 he traveled further, spending the summer east of the Cascades. He visited the Spokane and Snake Rivers, Kettle Falls, the Blue Mountains, and the Umpqua River. In 1827 he returned to England.

Many of his specimens, sent by ship from the Columbia, had already reached the Horticultural Society, and he was met with great acclaim. As a result of Douglas’s collections, salal, red flowering currant, Oregon grape, and other Northwest plants soon populated gardens in England and eventually throughout the world. Douglas fir trees planted from seeds he collected still stand in England and Scotland. “Doug fir” and other trees Douglas introduced (which include the ponderosa, western white and other pines, several true firs, and the Sitka spruce) have become commercially important not only in their native habitat but in Great Britain and many other countries.

He made two more trips to the Columbia River, but died tragically and mysteriously in Hawaii in 1834 at 35 years of age.

Still from Good Night, the first episode of The SimpsonsAudiences were introduced to The Simpsons for the first time, in the form of interstitial shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, on April 19, 1987.

The Simpsons was created by Portland-raised cartoonist Matt Groening (Ainsworth Elementary School and Lincoln High School).

That first short, titled Good Night, featured the whole family, other than Grandpa who was introduced later. Here’s the Wikipedia summary:

Homer and Marge say goodnight to their kids but all does not go according to plan. Bart philosophically contemplates the wonders of the mind, Lisa hears Marge say “Don’t let the bed bugs bite” and fears that bed bugs will eat her, and Maggie is traumatized by the lyrics of “Rock-a-bye Baby”. Ultimately, all of the kids decide to sleep with their parents.

OMSI Science Pub (19-April-2011)

Omsi Science PubBirds and Bridges: Bringing Portland’s Peregrines Back from the Brink is the topic of the latest OMSI Science Pub, on Tuesday, April 19, 2011:

Peregrine falcons are the world’s most widespread bird of prey and can be found on nearly every continent. However, due to the use of the pesticide DDT, by 1970 you could not find a peregrine nesting anywhere in the state of Oregon. In 1995, “Peregrine Watch” was born, and wildlife experts and bird-loving people began helping find nesting sites for the peregrines on Portland’s many bridges. Because of the efforts of more that 150 volunteers, the raptors are making a strong comeback in this urban setting. To date, at least 140 peregrine young have been hatched in Portland, and more than 50 young have fledged on the Fremont Bridge alone. Now, these majestic birds who can reach flight speeds of up to 200 mph can be seen hunting and nesting over downtown Portland. Come learn about these amazing birds and the decades of effort to recover our local populations.

The presenter is Bob Sallinger, conservation director for the Portland Audubon Society. He has been working with peregrine falcon recovery efforts since 1994.

This science pub takes place at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) from 7pm until 9pm, but arrive early (5pm doors open) to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! The suggested donation/cover charge is $3.00. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.
