Back Fence PDX (26-May-2011)

May 23, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Back Fence PDXThe Back Fence PDX story telling show returns to the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) this Thursday, May 26, 2011.

Story telling show? How’s that work?:

Our Back Fence Storytelling event is the kissing cousin to San Francisco’s Porchlight Storytelling Series. It is an evening with seven people telling true, unmemorized ten-minute stories based on the month’s theme. The stories must not have been performed publicly prior to their Back Fence PDX telling.

Heather and have had a great time at all the Back Fence PDX productions we’ve been to. For one thing free cupcakes from Saint Cupcake make the rounds at intermissions. The story tellers are always courageous and their stories are often amusing, always entertaining, and sometimes gut wrenching or cringe inducing – you really don’t know what to expect!

The theme of this particular show is HOT AS SHIT or MISFIT?, and the lineup includes:

ROD ENGLERT – Blood Spatter Expert

ZACHARY SCHOMBURG – Scary, No Scary + Octopus Books

MOE BOWSTERN – Fisherwoman + Former anarcho-activist

ERIC SCHEUR – Animator for TV Commercials

APRIL WOLFE – Snap Judgment + Comedy Duo: Just Desperation

But that’s not all!

YOU can put your name in for our super exciting LIGHTNING ROUND with celebrity guest SABRINA MILLER from Cascadia FM! FIVE randomly drawn audience members will have a chance to strut their narrative stuff by doing their best to tell an entire HOT AS SHIT story in just ONE MINUTE!

And don’t miss the Popina Swimwear fashion show at 7:15!

Reserve your tickets now for $12, and bring cash (for everyone’s convenience) to the show to claim them! A few non-reserved tickets will be available at the door for $15. The show is 21 and over only. Doors will open at 6:30pm for food and drink and chair claiming, fashion show at 7:15pm, and the show starts at 7:30pm.

May 23, 1992: Opening Day at the Oregon Coast Aquarium

May 23, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Oregon Coast AquariumThe Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport opened on May 23, 1992 (Eugene Register-Guard, 24-May-1992).

A pair of frolicking sea otters rescued from the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska upstaged politicians Saturday at formal opening ceremonies for the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

Gov. Barbara Roberts, Sen. Mark Hatfield, R-Ore., and Reps. Les AuCoin and Mike Kopetski, both D-Ore., commended organizers who worked a decade to turn their dream into a “world-class aquarium.”

Most of the aquarium’s exhibits focus on the native flora and fauna of the Oregon Coast, e.g. seals and sea lions, giant pacific octopus, sea bird aviary, and the aforementioned sea otters.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is one of Oregon’s top tourist attractions, hosting over 40,000 student visitors a year.

Video Interlude: PTFC Perfect

PTFC Perfect from Juliet Zulu on Vimeo.

Pretty friggin’ cool video by the folks at Juliet Zulu (Vimeo.com/julietzulu), music by Marmoset.

When asked to test out a new lens, we decided that shooting our favorite team on the planet would be perfect. So, three hours before kick off, we came up with a concept, took our team to three locations in Portland and filmed all footage simultaneously. On the field, Section 107 and 442 Soccer Bar. We logged, edited and colored the footage over night. The idea was simple. Show the culture and community that the Timbers have built. Three distinct vantage points with a common solidarity, RCTID.
