Buckman-Kerns Brewfest 2012

Buckman-Kerns Brewfest 2012The second annual Buckman-Kerns Brewfest returns Sunday, January 15, 2012 to The East Burn (1800 E. Burnside), from noon until 8pm.

The neighborhood breweries taking part in this rare January brewfest include:

  • Buckman Village Brewery
  • Burnside Brewing Co.
  • Coalition Brewing Co.
  • Cascade Barrel House
  • Migration Brewing Co.
  • Natian Brewery
  • Lucky Labrador Brewing

The $10 admission gets you a Brewfest Pint Glass (real glass!) and 4 tickets. Tickets are $1 each and 1 ticket gets you one taster or a full pint for 4 tickets. Food will also be available.

“The Streets of Chinatown” Comic Release (12-January-2012)

Hung Far Low illustration by Harry LauThe Dill Pickle Club, Portland’s creative cultural club, presents the release of DPC Oregon History Comics vol. 5: The Streets of Chinatown this Thursday, January 12, 2012.

Author and journalist Sarah Mirk will lead a discussion on the history and changes to the Chinatown community and will be joined by two important community leaders: Henry Sakamoto, one of the founders of the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Endowment and Mary Leong, neighborhood historian.

The presentation takes place at the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center (121 NW 2nd) from 5pm to 7pm. A public reception and light refreshment will follow. Guests can also view the permanent exhibit “Oregon Nikkei: Reflections of an American Community” at the center.

OMSI Science Pub (9-January-2012)

Omsi Science PubI Dig Bones: Adventures in Forensic Anthropology is the topic of of the next OMSI Science Pub on Monday, January 9, 2012:

What happens when mysterious human remains are found in the woods? How are bodies identified, even after death and decomposition? Dr. Nici Vance provides a glimpse into the life of bones, bodies, and biological anthropology as she explains how skeletal remains are discovered, recovered, and analyzed for identification purposes. Dr. Vance also highlights the importance of DNA analysis in bringing closure to families of missing persons throughout the nation and what you can do to help.

The presenter is Dr. Veronica “Nici” Vance from the Oregon State Police Forensic Laboratory and the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office. Nici currently works in the Forensic Biology section of the crime lab, which analyzes biological evidence from homicides, attempted homicides, assaults, and high profile cases. The Oregonian recently profiled her work [hat tip to Amanda in comments!].

This science pub takes place at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne) from 7pm until 9pm, but arrive early (5pm doors open) to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $5.00 suggested donation/cover charge. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.

Farmers MarketThe inaugural Portland Farmers Market Winter Market season debuts on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Shemanski Park (South Park Blocks between SW Salmon & Main).

Shop for winter produce, meats, cheeses, wine, seafood, baked goods and more every Saturday in January and February. Hot food, warming soups and covered spaces available to chase away the chills.

The market runs ever Saturday through February 25th, from 10am to 2pm. The market returns to PSU in March.
