Hawthorne Street Fair (26-August-2012)

August 20, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Hawthorne Street Fair 2012The 2012 Hawthorne Street Fair takes place Sunday, August 26, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard.

For the fourth year running the fair coincides with the Southeast Portland Sunday Parkways, which intersects with Hawthorne at 34th. Most of the street fair activities take place between 12th and 51st (take a look at the map). Clusters of arts, crafts, and food vendors pepper the side streets, sidewalks, and adjacent parking lots.

The Acoustic Stage is stationed at 42nd and Hawthorne. The Showcase Stage is at 34th, and beer gardens at 50th (at East Portland Eagles Aerie #3256) and 32nd (Bazi) feature stages as well.

Kids activities, including face painting, bubbles, kids music, puppet shows, and more, can be found (or avoided, as the case may be) at 35th.

Heather and I took in both the Sunday Parkways and Hawthorne Street Fair in 2009. The Hawthorne Street Fair does not really compare to Portland’s other renown neighborhood fests – the main drag is not closed to car traffic like it is during the Mississippi, Alberta, Belmont, and Multnomah Village street fairs. But there are beer gardens!

Visit HawthorneStreetFair.com for more details, including the full music schedule and more activities.

Sunday ParkwaysThe fourth of five 2012 Sunday Parkways takes place this Sunday, August 26, 2012 in Southeast Portland.

From 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. wind your way on bike or foot through mostly residential streets free of car traffic, from one park to the next. This year’s route is 9 miles long.

Spend a warm summer day walking and rolling around the Southeast Sunday Parkways…and for a challenge climb your way up Mt. Tabor! That’s right we have added Mt. Tabor back to the route. Activities, food, vendors, music, and fun will be in Laurelhurst, Colonel Summers, and Mt. Tabor Parks.

Shanghaied in Portland!! Or: The Shanghai Tunnels Are Bullshit! (21-August-2012)

August 19, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Shanghaied in PortlandThe Stumptown Stories series, geared to everyone who loves this city we live in, takes place most Tuesdays at Jack London bar (basement of the Rialto, SW 4th and Alder). Free to get in, but must be 21 or over – there’s a full bar!

This Tuesday night, August 21, 2012, Kick Ass Oregon History‘s inimitable resident historian, Doug Kenck-Crispin, will be debunking a banal Portland chestnut: Shanghaied in Portland!! (or: The Shanghai Tunnels Are Bullshit!).

As you have come to expect from this site, Kick Ass Oregon History delivers you the straight shit. In addition, we like to cover the exciting stories of Oregon’s past. So it was with a shit-ton of anticipation and frankly, excitement, that we began the researching and writing process to thoroughly cover our next topic… “Shanghaied in Portland!!” Which was a thing. And of course, we looked into these “Shanghai Tunnels…” which I really don’t think were a thing.

Prep yourself for Tuesday with the straight shit, Kick Ass Oregon History podcasts:

  • KAOH 5.2: Shanghaied in Portland!!
  • KAOH5.3: Shanghaied in Portland Part 2- The Bullshittening

Presentation begins at 7:30 p.m.
