History of the Albina Neighborhood.The Stumptown Stories: Free Tuesday Lecture Series, geared to anyone who is curious about the world and community in which we live and loves to learn new things, takes place most Tuesdays at Jack London bar (basement of the Rialto, SW 4th and Alder). Free to get in, but must be 21 or over – there’s a full bar!

This Tuesday, August 14, 2012 join Joe Streckert, a tour guide and researcher for Portland Walking Tours, as he presents The History of the Albina Neighborhood.

Streckert will focus particularly on the Vanport flood and the Providence developments, as well as the current controversies surrounding N Williams and other developments.

The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. Always free. Always fascinating.

2012 PDX Soapbox DerbyThe 16th annual PDX Adult Soap Box Derby takes place this Saturday, August 18, 2012 on Mt. Tabor.

Once a year a brave group of racers convene on the daunting slopes of Mt. Tabor to test their metal to their mettle. These pages are dedicated to all those who have spilled their blood, or even worse, spilled their beer. We thank our beloved volcano for allowing us to tickle her spine.”

The roster features 42 teams, divided into two categories: art, and science.

Racing starts at at 10 a.m., and should complete around 4 p.m. Watch from one of the designated viewing areas (see map – pdf). There are no vendors, so pack a picnic – beer and wine are allowed but no hard alcohol. Pets must be on leashes.

The after party takes place at 6pm at the Tonic Lounge (3100 NE Sandy). Awards will be handed out at 8pm, and at 9pm the music starts. Visit SoapboxRacer.com for more details, including FAQs, how you can volunteer, and galleries of past events and winners.

Multnomah Days 2012

Multnomah VillageThe 104th Multnomah Days celebration takes place Saturday, August 18, 2012 between SW 33rd and 39th on Capitol Highway in Multnomah Village. The fest runs from from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Start your morning with the Kiwanis Pancake and Sausage Breakfast at the Key Bank, from 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. – proceeds benefit the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp for Children and Adults with Disabilities. The breakfast includes juice and fresh Starbucks coffee too.

At 10 a.m. the ‘Biggest Little’ Parade begins – featuring musicians, street performers, cars, pets, and more. Timber Joey is the Grand Marshal this year!

Let the kids have free reign in the Kids Zone at the Multnomah Art Center. The third annual Kids’ Zone includes plenty of hands-on arts activities for the kids, including a petting zoo!

The adults will surely enjoy the beer and wine gardens, hosted by Sip D’Vine. Beer, wine, food, and live music are on tap from noon until 10 p.m.

In addition of course there will be about 100 vendors lining the car-free street, showcasing art, food, crafts and more.
