Walktober PDX 2012

October 5, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

WalktoberWalktober PDX 2012 runs from Saturday, October 6 through Halloween (the greatest walking holiday of the year).

Everyone is a pedestrian at some point in the day, whether it is by walking, rolling, or strolling. People walk for a thousand reasons: to get to the bus or MAX, to get to the store, to walk the dog, to commute to work, to spend time with friends, to unwind after a long day, to explore a neighborhood, to get to school, and many more reasons . . .
Walktober was created with the hope of helping people throughout the region find new ways to walk, and find places to walk and people to enjoy walking with.

Inspired by Pedalpalooza, three weeks of bikey fun in Portland held every June, the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition conceived Walktober to promote walking as a fun, healthy, ubiquitous activity in the Portland metro region.

Highlights include the Walk at Tryon Creek State Park on the first day of Walktober, October 6; the Walktober – Sellwood Pub Crawl on the 23rd; and the Streetcar Exhibit Walk on October 26.

Visit the Walktober website for the full calendar of walks, and feel free to add your own (follow these tips in creating your public walk).

The Wedge – Portland Celebrates Cheese Festival (6-October-2012)

The WedgeThe Wedge: Portland Celebrates Cheese Festival returns again to the Green Dragon & Buckman Botanical Brewery (928 SE 9th) this Saturday, October 6, 2012.

This farmer’s market-style event showcases artisan, specialty, and farmstead cheesemakers from throughout the Northwest.

Southeast 9th in front of the pub between Belmont and Yamhill will be blocked off to make room for over 30 cheesemakers, including Rogue Creamery (creators of one of my favorite cheeses, Rogue River Blue!), Tillamook Cheese, Portland Creamery, Willamette Valley Cheese Company, and more.

The cheese fest goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Though the event is free and open to the public, the sponsors suggest a $5 entry contribution to benefit the the nonprofit Oregon Cheese Guild‘s efforts to support and promote the artisan cheesemaker community.
