Fun weekend ahead – with or without a sweetheart: Beer, science, Oregon’s 157th birthday – and more!

Darwin Day – A celebration of Darwin’s Birthday featuring Dr. Kiki Sanford, host of the This Week in Science Podcast

Darwin DayDr. Kiki Sanford is a neurophysiologist by training and currently runs the This Week in Science radio program. Join Biology Investigation & Outreach to hear Dr. Kiki speak about genetics, evolution, and the future in celebration of Darwin’s 207th birthday!

Portland Night Market

Portland Night MarketThe Portland Night Market showcases 75+ businesses that call the great City of Portland home. Blending food, culture, music, drinks and retail together for an adventurous evening in the Industrial District. The event allows people to meet some of Portland’s best makers and creators set in the unique venue of a 100+ year old produce row warehouse. The PNM is a free event and open to all ages.

To kick off 2016, PNM is partnering with some of Portland’s sexier businesses for a special edition market, dubbed, “The Love Train.” We’ve brought on entertainment showcasing live music, aerialists, not to mention an aphrodisiac alley complete with chocolate, tastings, an oyster bar and loads of other goodies!

Zwickelmania

Zwickelmania 2016Zwickelmania, the annual one-day event in Oregon when breweries open their doors to the casual and hardcore beer fans, lands on Feb. 13th this year — from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 120 breweries, both big and small, are planning on participating with meet-the-brewer events and beer samples. For those who are planning a special Valentine’s Day trip to a place in Oregon, make sure to carve out some time to stop by a brewery or two while you are here. Visitors are invited to click on one of the six regions of Oregon on the Zwickelmania event page to see which breweries are participating.

Last year, more than 32,500 people toured 115 participating breweries statewide and the Oregon Brewers Guild is expecting that number to increase in 2016.

“Celebrate Oregon’s birthday in style at the Oregon Historical Society! The one and only Thomas Lauderdale will be at the piano as former Governors Ted Kulongoski and Barbara Roberts lead the singing of “Happy Birthday.” Feast on cake from Gerry Frank’s Konditeri, and meet Gerry himself as he signs copies of the latest edition of Gerry Frank’s Oregon.”

Stumptown Stories: Happy Birthday, Oregon! (9 February 2016)

Oregon Birthday 1859Come on out to the Jack London bar (basement of the Rialto, SW 4th and Alder) on Tuesday, 9 February 2016 Happy Birthday, Oregon – presented by Stumptown Stories.

February 14th is Oregon’s birthday! And to celebrate, Stumptown Stories is bringing more historic tales of Portland’s past…with cake! It’s also the day after Lunar New Year begins, so Heather Arndt Anderson will be talking about the history of Chinese food in Portland. JB Fisher will be regaling us with tales of Jimmy Valentine and the notorious Brice child kidnapping attempt in the mid-1950s. A good time will be had by all! And much learniness!

Stumptown Stories, batshit crazy stories from the murkiest, weirdest, and nuttiest corners of Portland history, takes place the second Tuesday of every month at the Jack London.

Admission is free. Doors open at 7:00 PM, 21 and over only.

NW Coffee Beer Invitational 2016

NW Coffee Beer 2016The Northwest’s two favorite brews are in the spotlight again for the 3rd NW Coffee Beer Invitational. Sixteen talented brewers were asked to create freshly-brewed beer made with locally-roasted coffee. With the emphasis on flavors, and an abv of 7% or less, this event promises to surprise us with both provocative and inspired combinations. Past styles have included IPA, Vienna Lager, Breakfast Stout, Baltic Porter and even a Berliner Weisse!

The cozy Goose Hollow Inn on SW Jefferson is the venue, so join us for not only great beers but a unique, convivial atmosphere. The menu will include some special savories to compliment the brews and we will have live music from The Austin Stewart Quartet and Logger’s Daughter in the outdoor heated tent.

Mochitsuki Portland

Mochitsuki 2016Mochitsuki, Portland’s 20th annual Japanese New Year celebration takes place Sunday, 31 January 2016 at Portland State University’s Smith Memorial Student Union (1825 SW Broadway).

“The goal of Mochitsuki is to celebrate tradition by sharing Japanese and Japanese American culture. We welcome you to join the celebration while enjoying the great food, performers, and activities presented at Mochitsuki!”

Artisinful! – Beer and Chocolate Festival (30 January 2016)

Culmination Brewing Company presents the first annual Artisinful! — Beer & Chocolate Festival on Saturday, 30 January 2016 at the brewery (2117 NE Oregon) from noon until 6 PM.

Here in Portland we have great beer and great chocolate!

Artisinful is a festival to celebrate chocolate and beer and the artisans who craft both of these delectable delights!

We will have local Portland area chocolatiers on hand providing samples for you to enjoy as well as chocolate that you can purchase and take home to have for Valentine’s Day happening just two weeks later.

We will also have 12 each 5 oz pours on hand, and each of these 12 pours pair very well with chocolate.

Admission to the festival is free. A pour package, which includes a 5 ounce tasting glass and 4 taster tickets is $12. Additional tasters are $2 each.
