Portland Timbers Primer (2010)

The 2010 Portland Timbers start the season at home this Saturday, April 17th. Their first opponents are the Rhochester Rhinos, who started league play this past weekend with a draw at Miami. The Timbers Army tailgate begins 3ish in the parking lot at SW 18th and Salmon. Match starts at 7pm.

TEAM AND LEAGUE

Timbers The Portland Timbers are one of the top supported teams in the United Soccer Leagues (USL). In the USSF Division 2 league they compete against other USL and North American Soccer League (NASL) teams. If this sounds confusing, it is because it is confusing. But after we get through this season, the Timbers will join Major League Soccer as an expansion franchise), and put minor league ways behind them (hopefully).

The Timbers play their home matches at Portland’s venerable PGE Park (SW 18th and Morrison). For information about the team’s roster, coaching staff, and history visit PortlandTimbers.com and the Portland Timbers wikipedia page. The Timbers 2010 Schedule stretches from Saturday, April 17th all the way to the October 10th, with playoffs (of course!) to follow.

TIMBERS ARMY

By American standards, the Portland Timbers football club has a long and storied history, and sport one of the most boisterous, and best known, supporters groups in the country – The Timbers Army. The Timbers Army is a loose, grass roots, organization consisting of fans of all ages, professions, and political persuasions. The group receives no official imprimatur by the team, has no official leadership or structure [the 107ist organization not withstanding – see below], and primarily serves to have a hell of a time in the North End at Timbers matches.

How do you join the Timbers Army? Come to a match, buy a General Admission ticket, and follow the noise and scarves and green. The entire North End of PGE Park is unassigned seating. Just a few years ago the Army filled only the bottom rows of section 107, but now, at some matches, the entire North End can’t contain the group. Come on down! If you’re shy sit or stand on the periphery of these sections for a game or two learning the chants and songs and observing the ruckus. Unless you’re soulless, you will be drawn in.

107 INDEPENDENT SUPPORTERS’ TRUST

Recently a large contingent of long time Timbers Army veterans established the 107 Independent Supporters’ Trust (107ist). The Timbers Army is still simply a grass roots, organization consisting of fans, but the 107ist organization, made up of Timbers Army members, is involved in planning tifo, organizing bus trips to away matches, and more:

The 107 Independent Supporters’ Trust is the machinery behind the Timbers Army. It supports soccer in and around Portland, Oregon, from the grass roots to the highest professional level. It fuels the Army and supports soccer charities and soccer events in Soccer City USA.

TIMBERS DISCUSSION

The Soccer City USA Message Board, aka Talk Timbers is the information headquarters for the Timbers Army (and really all things soccer in Portland, Oregon). Sign up for an account and contribute to the discussion. Keep up with the latest news, learn about and contribute to the latest chant or tifo efforts, and get to know your fellow Timbers Army members virtually. Many of the folks you’ll meet in the stands are better known amongst the group by their message board moniker than their real names.

One of the best local Timbers blog is the Portland Timbers USL Blog at The Offside.
A new addition this year, but already top caliber: The Woodwork (writers include Bob Kellet, who up until last year wrote for the Offside blog above)
The OregonLive Timbers blog is nowadays capably run by Kip Kesgard.
Dropping Timber is a relatively new, though already solid resource for Timbers and MLS news.
The Timber Mill is the best source for news, match reports, photos, and stats.
The Portland Timbers website has press releases, roster updates, and generally the kind of news you’d expect from an official organ of the team.
The Oregonian’s Timbers coverage has improved noticeably the past year (no doubt in anticipation of greater interest due to the MLS)
The 107 Report is the Timbers pod cast. Pre and post game analysis and interviews, music and hijinks.
Google Alerts are your friend. Set one up for “Portland Timbers” and get linkage emailed to you.
There are some old standbys, but new chants and songs are introduced fluidly all the time; the best way to learn them is to attend the games and keep up with the message board threads. Song sheets are occasionally handed out at games, and googling Timbers Army Chants brings up some good, but also a lot of outdated, info.

Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (03/30/2010)

It’s been a while since the last Timbers Tidbits. The formerly regular feature had pretty much been replaced by the Friday Timbers news roundups. But damn if lately there hasn’t been a lot more Timbers (and Timbers-ish) news out there – more than I can reasonably handle in a single weekly post. I attribute this to two key factors: the 2010 season is about to kick off (April 17!), and MLS is on the 2011 horizon.

Last Friday afternoon the Timbers defeated Vancouver 2-0 in preseason play. I don’t put much stock in the preseason, I think mainly it helps the coaches see what they got, and it helps the players build their fitness, but this preseason has been impressive: wins at OSU and Vancouver, a draw against San Jose, and a win against a hyped MLS side.

With the season right around the corner, we naturally begin taking stock . . . which is exactly what Bob Kellett has done at The Woodwork: Taking Stock with Three Weeks to Go.

In that piece, Bob points to what he rightly calls an interesting map assembled by Andrew Guest over at Pitch Invasion. Oregon impresses.

Also at Pitch Invasion, and also by Portland based soccer writer Andrew Guest, is an interesting analysis of fan culture: A Mental Game: Us versus Them and the Social Psychology of Fandom. The Portland rivalry with a club up north features prominently.

And there’s more tangentially Timbers related meta soccer news at The Oregon Economics Blog, which takes a look at trends in American soccer team crests in Soccernomics: Crests. We all hope Merritt makes the right decision regarding an updated Timbers crest – release promised in June.

In supporter news:

The recently established 107 Independent Supporters Trust (107ist) board elections are in full swing.

Your ballot will help decide which 11 107ist members will serve as the board for the 2010 season. The 11 candidates receiving the most votes will become your 107ist Council of XI. Although a normal term of office is 3 years, these members will serve for 1, 2, or 3 years, depending on how many votes they receive. The window for this election will run from 12:01 AM on March 29, 2010 until 11:59 PM on April 10, 2010. On April 11th we will announce the results of the election at a meeting at a place to be determined soon.

If you’re already a member, you should already have received your ballot (if not, email elections@timbersarmy.org with your concerns and questions).

In other supporter related news, TimbersArmy.org has opened a store. The offerings currently include stickers, t-shirts, and pint glasses. Prices are cheap (e.g. $10 and $12 for t-shirts), and the coolest thing is that all merchandise proceeds will go towards 107ist operations and activities as well as charitable organizations.

Another supporter group is forming, for now known as the Cider Girls Redux. This is a supporters group for the women of the Timbers Army. More details at the facebook page and this thread on SCUSA: Calling all Timbers Army Ladies.

And the final supporter news: You may know the Rowdies as those kids with the beer bong at the tailgates. Now they have their own website too: RowdiesPDX.org

Timbers Army Establishes 107 Independent Supporters’ Trust

As always, to join the Timbers Army, all you have to do is show up at matches and bleed green and yellow.

But you now have a new opportunity to participate: join the 107 – an Independent Supporters’ Trust.

The 107 Independent Supporters’ Trust is the machinery behind the Timbers Army. It supports soccer in and around Portland, Oregon, from the grass roots to the highest professional level. It fuels the Army and supports soccer charities and soccer events in Soccer City USA.

This new group, conjured up by the fans and established by a core group of hard working Timbers fans, will be involved in planning tifo, bus trips to away matches, and charitable work. The trust is currently pursuing tax-exempt 501(c)(6) status with the IRS.

The 107ist was publicly launched yesterday on the Timbers Army website. The first question addressed in the announcement: What is 107ist?

Much as the atmosphere of a soccer match resembles a college football game, an IST is kind of like an alumni boosters club: hard-core fans who want to have a stake in the team they love.

The second question: Why should I join?

The Timbers won’t be the only ones going to a whole new level in 2011. The Army will have its own sections set aside in the newly remodeled PGE Park. There will be a Timbers Army season ticket that puts you in the center of the bedlam.
In 2011, “the greatest football supporters the world has ever seen” are only going to get stronger, louder and prouder.
A 107ist membership is just $20 a year, with the money going to fund the Timbers Army’s effort in supporting the team and in contributing to soccer-related events and charities. And there’s more, of course!
