ScanFair 2012

November 27, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

I'm a Viking!Celebrate the sights, sounds, tastes and traditions of a Scandinavian Christmas at the 28th annual Portland ScanFair, presented by the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation, this Saturday and Sunday, December 1 and 2, 2012.

The fair returns this year to the Exhibit Hall in the Memorial Coliseum (300 N Winning Way). Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and children under 12 are free. Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Though primarily a holiday bazaar featuring Scandinavian food, crafts, and sundry, there is also an impressive entertainment lineup (pdf) featuring live traditional music and folk dancing performances and classes.

But my absolute favorite part of the fair is the annual pickled herring eating contest! Check out Nick Capri’s impressive 2008 win below. He took home as a prize a bottle of Krogstad Aquavit, made by Portland’s House Spirits. This year’s contest goes down at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday – don’t miss it!

OMSI Science Pub: The Physics of Ballet (16-October-2012)

October 15, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Omsi Science PubOMSI Science Pub presents The Physics of Ballet on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne).

Ballet dancers’ grace and beauty of movement is awe inspiring. They seem to float across the stage as if gravity doesn’t exist for them, but the laws of physics govern ballet dancers’ movements just as much as they determine how the rest of us move throughout our day. Dancers have learned how to use physics concepts such as force, impulse, inertia, and conservation of angular momentum to harness the energy created by their bodies and channel it into artful jumps and turns that wow audiences.

But how do these concepts work? How do the countless hours of practice help dancers use physics to their advantage? How do these forces differ in their effect on regular audience members? At this Science Pub we will have live performances by dancers from Oregon Ballet Theatre, help from physicists from PSU, and audience participation, all of which will help define and demonstrate how the laws of physics can be used to create the art of dance.

The presenters are Ralf Widenhorn, PhD, a researcher and professor of physics at Portland State University; and Anne Mueller, is the artistic coordinator and a former principal dancer for the Oregon Ballet Theatre. Dr. Widenhorn will assisted by PhD students Lester Lampert, William Porter and Justin Dunlap, all of whom are members of n the leadership team of the Science Outreach Society (S.O.S.), a non-profit organization run by volunteers, PSU students, and faculty to bring science education to Portland communities and people of all ages.

The science begins at 7 p.m. but arrive early to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $5.00 suggested donation/cover charge. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.

Greek Festival (October 5-7, 2012)

September 26, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Greek Festival 2012The 61st annual Portland Greek Festival takes place October 5 through 7, 2012 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (NE 32nd and Glisan).

Immigrants for Greece began arriving to the Northwest in the late 1800s to work in fishing, lumber, railroad and other jobs. Settling in Portland they established their church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in southeast Portland. Moving to a new and larger church on 32nd and NE Glisan in 1952, the mortgage had to be paid off. The ladies decided to help by holding a bazaar with their handwork, food, pastries, music and dances from their homeland. This was the beginning of what is now known as the Annual Greek Festival which is one of the largest of its kind.

Join upwards of 15,000 other guests to enjoy the greek food (feta, lamb, souvlaki, spanakopita, koulourakia, diples, bougatsa, etc.), cooking demonstrations, crafts, and of course beer and wine!

Entertainment includes Greek Folk Dancing performances and music, and activities for the kids.

The fest runs 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Visit the festival website for more details, including food and drink menus and prices.
