PDX Baconfest 2012

PDX BaconfestThe fourth annual Portland Baconfest takes place Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 18th and East Burnside, adjacent to the East Burn (1800 E Burnside), from noon until 9 p.m. – it’s a giant street festival celebrating bacon!

Thousands of bacon lovers attended last year’s fest, thoroughly lubricating their cardiovascular system and contributing hundreds of pounds of food to the Oregon Food Bank.

Entertainment includes four live bands and a skate competition, sponsored by Bacon Skateboards.

Festival goers can compete in the Ultimate Bacon Eating Contest, the Bacon Dance Off, Greasy Slip N Slide, and the Triathlon De Pig – prizes include iPods, grills, and more!

Dozens of sponsors and vendors will be on hand offering their bacon, and non-bacon, related wares.

Admission is a mere $5 and a suggested donation of 2 canned food items for the Oregon Food Bank. Must be 21 or over to enter! For more details visit the Baconfest website or the Facebook event page. Arrive early to sign up for the contests.

Oregon Symphony Waterfront Concert – And Fireworks! (30-August-2012)

Waterfront ConcertThe Oregon Symphony 2012 Waterfront Concert takes place Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

At 5 p.m. the Portland Youth Philharmonic performs, followed by the Oregon Symphony at 7 p.m.

The traditional grand finale is a performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture with an elaborate fireworks show, which includes shots from military cannons from the Oregon Army National Guard 218th Field Artillery.

The concert is free, and no tickets are required. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to Tom McCall Waterfront Park and enjoy the show. Visit the Oregon Symphony event page and read the press release for more details.

Portland Pirate Festival 2012

Portland Pirate FestivalThe seventh annual Portland Pirate Festival invades Historic St. Helens, Oregon again year, on Saturday and Sunday, September 1 and 2, 2012.

PORTLAND PIRATE FESTIVAL is an annual family-oriented event that promotes fun and education through Historical Re-enactment, Music, Dance, and interactive Theater; while providing increased cultural awareness and philanthropic involvement to charitable organizations in the community.

The fest features pirate-themed and non-pirate-themed music, dance and performance, tall ships, stuff for kids, the marauders market, and of course there is grub and grog!

The aaarrrs and blimeys begin at 10 a.m. both days, and continue until midnight Saturday and 10 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets can be acquired at the gate, via Brown Paper Tickets, or at select local retailers.

History Pub: Oregon’s Country Music Heritage (28-August-2012)

Oregon's Country Music HeritageOregon’s Country Music Heritage: A Night of Rollicking History & Performance: is the topic of the latest History Pub at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne), this Tuesday, August 28, 2012.

Country Music in Oregon has a long, deep fascinating history, much of which remains unknown to the general public. On what is the 70th anniversary of the first sojourn to Portland by the King of Country, Hank Williams, McMenamins, Oregon Historical Society and the Holy Names Heritage Center present historical presentations and musical performances celebrating the local country-western personalities, places and culture.

Peter Blecha, one of the Northwest’s best-known and most revered music historians and longtime curator of Seattle’s music museum, Experience Music Project, kicks off the evening with a discussion of Oregon’s country music heritage from the 1900s to the present. A panel discussion will follow, and the evening will be topped off with a musical performance by veterans of the great Heck Harper bands.

The show begins at 7 p.m., entrance is free, and this event is all ages.

OMSI After Dark: “Chic Geeks: Fashion, Music, and the Science of Style” (29-August-2012)

OMSI After DarkChic Geeks: Fashion, Music, and the Science of Style is the theme OMSI After Dark on Wednesday, August 28, 2012.

PDX-come and flaunt your thick-framed glasses and peg-legged little hipster jeans! See what curious forms a sub woofer can coax from Oobleck, get a Henna tattoo, and make a duct tape wallet. Check out the future of fashion with local designers and go old-school with music on the Gameboy with chiptunes.

The OMSI AFter Dark Summer Concert Series continues as well, featuring performances by Lost Lander and Blue Skies for Black Heart.

Visit the OMSI Cafe for special menu items from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Four bars throughout the museum feature beer and wine and cocktails.

Featured science demonstrations and activities include Gimme Distortion!, What’s the Frequency?, and Chladni Plate. Coffee, spirits, chocolate, and beer vendors will be on hand.

Hours are 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission is $15 for non-members, $9 for members. You can buy tickets online, or at the door (no reservations necessary). 21 and over only!
