Swift WatchChapman Vaux’s Swift Watch 2012 – final weekend!

Every September thousands of Vaux’s Swifts come to Portland. After spending their day eating bugs, the Swifts coalesce in Northwest Portland, flying in a giant undulating swirl in the sky above the school. Around sunset the swirl gets more compact, like a ground pepper tornado, and begins disappearing, measure by measure, down the chimney. On the lawn below hundreds of Portlanders stare mesmerized at the sky, from the comfort of lawn chairs and blankets. Boos erupt when opportunistic Peregrine falcons get lucky. [more]

Greek Festival (October 5-7, 2012)

September 26, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Greek Festival 2012The 61st annual Portland Greek Festival takes place October 5 through 7, 2012 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (NE 32nd and Glisan).

Immigrants for Greece began arriving to the Northwest in the late 1800s to work in fishing, lumber, railroad and other jobs. Settling in Portland they established their church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in southeast Portland. Moving to a new and larger church on 32nd and NE Glisan in 1952, the mortgage had to be paid off. The ladies decided to help by holding a bazaar with their handwork, food, pastries, music and dances from their homeland. This was the beginning of what is now known as the Annual Greek Festival which is one of the largest of its kind.

Join upwards of 15,000 other guests to enjoy the greek food (feta, lamb, souvlaki, spanakopita, koulourakia, diples, bougatsa, etc.), cooking demonstrations, crafts, and of course beer and wine!

Entertainment includes Greek Folk Dancing performances and music, and activities for the kids.

The fest runs 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Visit the festival website for more details, including food and drink menus and prices.
