History Pub: Women Who Shaped Our City (26-March-2012)

March 25, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Women Who Shaped Our City: Librarian Mary Frances Isom and Recreation Director Dorothea M. Lensch is the topic of the latest History Pub at the Kennedy School (5736 NE 33rd), this Monday, March 26, 2012.

As head librarian of the Library Association of Portland from 1902–1920, Mary Frances Isom (1865–1920) transformed what is now the Multnomah County Library system into a major community asset that continues to have an enormous impact on Portland’s cultural life. Dorothea M. Lensch (1907-2000) was Portland Parks and Recreation’s first Director of Recreation from 1937 and 1974 – a period in which her influential vision created comprehensive, city-wide park programs, including arts, culture, and recreation programs for shipbuilders’ families, low-income adults and children, introduced summer outdoor concerts to Washington Park and saw the formation of the Portland Opera Association, Chamber Music Northwest, Japanese Garden, the 40-Mile Loop, and the Children’s Museum.

The presenters are Tim DuRoche, a Portland-based cultural advocate, writer, jazz musician, and artist, and Penny Hummel, currently director of the Canby Public Library and a past president of the Friends of the Multnomah County Library.

Join event co-sponsors Oregon Historical Society and Holy Names Heritage Center at 7pm Monday for a beer and history! Admission is free and this event is all ages. Please bring canned food donations for the Oregon Food Bank!

OMSI Science Pub (5-March-2012)

Omsi Science PubFood Fray: Inside the Controversy over Genetically Modified Food is the topic of the next Portland OMSI Science Pub on Monday, March 5, 2012 at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne):

Americans have been eating genetically modified foods for more than a decade, yet the controversy surrounding them continues, both here and abroad. From Oregon ballot measures to World Trade Organization battles to issues of hunger and food security in developing countries, the topic of GM food has raised scientific and ethical questions and concerns. The approval of several new GM crops such as sugar beets and alfalfa in 2011, as well as the pending approval of GM salmon, continues to capture consumer attention. At this Science Pub, we’ll talk about the real-life experiences and wide-ranging perspectives of the scientists, farmers, policymakers, and grassroots activists on the front lines of this fierce debate, going beyond the hype to address the current questions and answers surrounding genetically modified foods.

The presenter is Dr. Lisa H. Weasel, associate professor of biology at Portland State University, and author of Food Fray: Inside the Controversy Over Genetically Modified Food, which will be available for purchase at the pub.

The science begins at 7pm but arrive early (5pm doors open) to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $5.00 suggested donation/cover charge. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.

Other Things To Do in Portland on Super Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday is American’s biggest [mostly] secular holiday. And it’s happening this Sunday, February 5, 2012. But what about those of us who cannot tolerate American-football? Sure, we could swallow our smugness and drink bud light and eat cheese dip with the neanderthals, but that’s not the only solution:

Sunday will be a good day to enjoy parks; museums; and pubs, taverns, and bars that don’t have TVs – they’ll all be almost empty. [more]

OMSIIt’s the first Sunday of the month, so OMSI admission is only $2! (But it will be very crowded; Heather and I visited two years ago on Super Bowl Sunday and had a great time, but were unpleasantly surprised by the crowds of kids. Apparently cheap admission prices trumps Super Bowl for many parents.)

Crowds will certainly be thinner at the Oregon Zoo, and the forecast actually looks delightful!

Bargain Hunting PDX 2012If you’re in a shopping mood, visit the Crystal Ballroom and Lola’s Room (1332 W Burnside) for Bargain Hunting 101‘s mother of all clearance sales:

Bargain Hunting is the Mother of All Clearance Sales, but what does that really mean? It means that you can expect to find some of the most unique, one of a kind, limited runs and close outs discounts from handmade indie artists and local boutiques. In other words, Bargain Hunting has highly desirable merchandise at prices you NEVER find on this type of inventory.

Celebrate SuperBach Sunday with the Bach Cantata Choir at 2 pm on Super Bowl Sunday. The concert is FREE and will be held at Rose City Park Presbyterian Church, 1907 NE 45th Ave (NE Sandy & 45th). The program:

Jan Sweelinck (1562-1621): Laudate Dominum
Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703): Cantata, Es erhub sich ein Streit
Georg Phillip Telemann (1681-1767): Viola Concerto – Karen Vincent, soloist
J.S. Bach: Cantata #11, Ascension Oratorio

And of course Powell’s Books (1005 W Burnside) is open.

Really, the world is your oyster if you’re free from the clutches of the NFL on Super Bowl Sunday.
