January 11, 2016 by Dave Leave a Comment

Stumptown Stories presents Art ‘n Opium on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Jack London bar (basement of the Rialto, SW 4th and Alder).

We’re back for another round of Portland history. Start 2016 off by stuffing your head with art drugs!

Joe Streckert (Interesting Times) will get into the nitty-gritty of Portland’s plentiful public art, share the stories behind a number of high-profile pieces, and tell you why Portland has so damn much open air statuary.

Finn JD John (Offbeat Oregon History) will dive into the history of opium in Portland Oregon, from smoking to smuggling to how the law dealt with it. Current legislation prevents him from giving out samples, but the Jack London has plenty of booze on hand.

Stumptown Stories, batshit crazy stories from the murkiest, weirdest, and nuttiest corners of Portland history, takes place the second Tuesday of every month at the Jack London.

Admission is free. Doors open at 6:30 PM, 21 and over only.

History Pub: “Shaping the Public Good: Women Making History in the Pacific Northwest” 30 November 2015

November 29, 2015 by Dave Leave a Comment

Shaping the Public Good: Women Making History in the Pacific NorthwestSue Armitage, Emerita Professor of History and Women’s Studies at Washington State University in Pullman, presents Shaping the Public Good: Women Making History in the Pacific Northwest on Monday, 30 November 2015 at the Kennedy School Theater (5736 NE 33rd).

Drawing on her three decades of research and teaching and based on hundreds of secondary sources, Armitage’s account explores the varied ways in which, beginning in the earliest times and continuing to the present, women of all races and ethnicities have made the history of our region. Armitage shows that even though women were barred from positions of public authority until recently, they have always worked quietly and informally to assure the stability and security of their families and communities. Women’s community building and cooperative skills have been decisive in developing the societies of the Pacific Northwest- Washington, Oregon, Idaho, western Montana, and British Columbia.

History Pub, presented by McMenamins, Oregon Historical Society, and the Holy Names Heritage Center, is free and open to all ages. Doors open at 6 PM, and the talk begins at 7 PM.

Portland Weekend Amusements (13-15 November 2015)

November 12, 2015 by Dave Leave a Comment

We’ve entered the lull between the end of the big Fall festivals and the holiday season – when the weather turns to crap and folks aren’t quite ready to start hanging the mistletoe. This is a good time for indoor activities like drinking beer and watching movies!

BelgianFest 2015

Bailey's Taproom BelgianFest 2015Tired of IPAs? No? Well I am – which is why I’m heading to Bailey’s Taproom (213 SW Broadway) on Saturday, 14 November. It’s time for the annual BelgianFest 2015.

“As any beer snob worth his candi sugar knows, the gamut of Belgian styles is a veritable who’s who/what’s what of the best in beer. With exceptional esters derived from unique yeast strains, Belgian brews evoke flavors that break the mold and redefine the concept of everyone’s favorite beverage.”

Film Screening: 16mm Orphan Film from Oregon’s Classrooms

OHSIn October 2011 Indiana University in Bloomington acquired over twelve-thousand 16mm film prints from the state of Oregon. From sheep shearing and venereal disease to the finer points of how to tie-dye these films span over sixty years of audio-visual education in Oregon. What value do these films hold for audiences in 2015? Why did they end up at a major (out of state) university film archive? These questions and more will be tackled as we bring some of these films back to Oregon for their first public screening in decades.

NW Filmmakers’ Festival

NW Filmmakers' FestivalHarnessing and celebrating the best of Northwest film is both the Film Center’s responsibility and joy. As we continue to grow as a fresh and vital institution for the study and celebration of regional film, we’re compelled to keep up a constant search for new filmmakers, new work, and new ways the Film Center can bring artists and audiences together.

As we’ve discovered over the past 42 years, Northwest filmmakers continue to create engaging and progressive work that provides a guarantee of ongoing innovation year after year. Our task is to create a showcase that captures the vibrancy and variety of the cinematic art being created across the Northwest. We invited Steve Anker to help us shape this year’s selection and we hope his discriminating vision, heart, and mind add to your enjoyment of the program.
