Weekend Amusements (October 14-16, 2011)

October 13, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Fall has officially arrived, in my book, when the apples arrive. Well this weekend (and next too!) over 50 apple varieties will be available at the Portland Nursery Apple Tasting event, so I daresay fall has arrived. Also the Timbers host Houston in what may be the final home match of the season, if the team doesn’t make the playoffs. The second annual Oregon Archives Crawl takes place Saturday! Read on for details on all these events, and several more . . .

All Weekend

Apple Tasting Event at Portland NurseryPortland Nursery Apple Tasting Event 2011

Portland Nursery‘s 24th Annual Apple Tasting Event takes place over the next two weekends (Friday-Sunday, October 14-16, and 21-23) at the SE 50th and Stark location.

After the beer-focused festivals, this is my favorite fall event. Apple tasting, old fashioned cider pressing, apple desserts, cooking demonstrations, and live music – what’s not to like? Heather also freakin’ loves apples! [more]

Friday

Shine A Light 2011Shine A Light

Shine A Light 2011 takes place Friday, October 14, 2011 at the Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park).

Portland TimbersPortland Timbers vs. Houston Dynamo

The Portland Timbers (11-13-7) host the Houston Dynamo (10-9-13) Friday night in the final home match of the regular season. The Timbers are on the cusp of the last playoff position, and three points Friday night would pull them even with Houston at 43 points. Win, draw, or lose Friday, the playoff picture may not become clear for a few more weeks: only 5 points currently separate Colorado, New York, Houston and Portland for the last spot. The Timbers play two more regular seasons matches, on the road, after Friday. [more]

Pittock MansionStorm Day: Commemorating the 1962 Columbus Day Storm

Pittock Mansion‘s annual Storm Day event, which commemorates the 1962 Columbus Day Storm, takes place this Saturday, October 15, 2011. . . .
The then privately owned, and up for sale, Pittock Mansion sustained significant damage during the storm. It was restored and in 1965 the historic house opened as the museum we know it as now. [more]

Shine A Light 2011 at the Portland Art Museum (14-October-2011)

October 11, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Shine A Light 2011Shine A Light 2011 takes place Friday, October 14, 2011 at the Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park).

This annual event reshapes the Museum experience through installations, performances, and presentations throughout the campus. Innovative activities push the conventional boundaries of art.

Activities go all day, from 10am until midnight. But things really get interesting in the evening with performances, tours, workshops, games, and more – inside and outside the museum.

This year, Museum-goers will have the opportunity to get a hair cut in the style of their favorite Museum artwork; pick up art-inspired recipes by popular Portland chefs; make their own Museum postcards; engage in beer/art conversations; get a tattoo inspired by artwork in the collection; enjoy food inspired by the Museum; find dance in unexpected places; square dance the night away; and much more. Shine a Light offers an exciting opportunity to reinvigorate your relationship with art by engaging with the Museum in unexpected ways and to join the community at large in celebrating art.

Download the Shine A Light catalogue (pdf) for more details. Admission is $15 or free with museum admission. Museum members get in free.

October 10, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Oregon Archives Crawl 2011
The 2nd annual Oregon Archives Crawl takes place Saturday, October 15, 2011.

Crawlers begin at any of the four host locations:  Portland Archives and Records Center, the Portland State University Millar Library, Multnomah County Central Library or theOregon Historical Society.

Crawlers can tour some of the facilities and get a glimpse of where all these treasures are stored, see how Portland has changed over the years through photos and maps, and touch artifacts ranging from police dockets dating back to the late 1800s to medical artifacts from OHSU (maybe even a skull).

Pick up your free “passport” at any host location, and make sure to get stamps as you crawl from site to site.

At each site also hosts other participating local archives and heritage organizations. Over 30 organizations are participating in this year’s Archives Crawl, including Oregon Health and Sciences University, theGenealogical Forum of Oregon Library, Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center, the Multnomah County Records Program and the Dill Pickle Club.

The archive crawl runs from 10am to 3pm and is free and open to the public. Anyone interested in history is welcome at the archive crawl – you don’t have to be a history scholar.

Bring your fully stamped passport with you to the After Party at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) and enter a drawing for items donated by participating organizations. Relax and chat with archivists, historians, and you fellow history buffs while enjoying live music. The party runs from 3:30pm to 6pm and is open and free to the public – but bring money for McMenamins’ food and beer!

Weekend Amusements (September 23-25, 2011)

September 22, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

I am not exaggerating when I state that this weekend is my favorite of the year. The Polish Festival is my favorite annual cultural event, and the Oaks Park Oktoberfest, also this weekend, is near the top of the list too. In addition there are several other Oktoberfests this weekend, a Reed College community celebration, Retro Gaming Expo, and more – something for everyone, especially those who love beer!

Ongoing

Swift WatchChapman Vaux’s Swift Watch 2011

Every September thousands of Vaux’s Swifts come to Portland. They spend their days eating lots of bugs. In the late afternoon the Swifts begin flying in a giant undulating swirl in the sky about the school. Around sunset they swirl more tightly, like a ground pepper tornado, and begin disappearing, measure by measure, down the chimney. On the lawn below, hundreds of Portlanders gather on lawn chairs and blankets to stare at the sky, mesmerized. Boos erupt when opportunistic Peregrine falcons occasionally get lucky. The crowd cheers, however, when the predators are thwarted. Meanwhile unruly oblivious children scream and roll down the grassy hill. [more
