Portland Highland Games 2010As if there weren’t already enough things to do this weekend, the 2010 Portland Highland Games take place Saturday, July 17th at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon.

Spend the day among the Scots! The tradition returns and we invite you, your family and friends to join us for traditional Scottish entertainment and fun.

What will you enjoy at the Games?

Scottish dancing; piping, drumming, and fiddling competitions; athletic competitions; musical entertainment; traditional food and shopping; children’s activities; clan tents and more!

And this year, we’re thrilled that our featured guest pipe band is the six-time and reigning world champions, the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band from Vancouver, Canada. They’ll play on our field just a few weeks before heading to Scotland to defend their title!

Visit PHGA.org for the full schedule and details.

The Scottish Highland village of Carrbridge visits Portland

May 7, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

As part of a delegation from the Scottish village of Carrbridge, home of the annual World Porridge Making Championship, filmmaker Fergus Thom visited Portland recently to meet Bob Moore of Bob’s Red Mill fame, and to take a look behind the scenes of the company’s giant milling operations.

The visit also included some Portland area sight seeing, which Fergus captured in the short film below (set to music by Portland’s own MarchFourth Marching Band):

For more videos, photos, and information, visit Carrbridge Films: The American Adventure: Portland & Oregon, January 2010.

Carrbridge Films is an independent, entirely youth-run, film company based in Carrbridge, a small village in the heart of the Highlands of Scotland, Cairngorm National Park. You can find them on YouTube, flickr, Twitter, and Facebook.

January 23-24: Pie Day, Snuggies, Haiti Benefit with Chervona, and Portland Revels’ Pub Sing

January 22, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

Saturday, January 23rd is National Pie Day, according to the American Pie Council. What this means for us is summed up in this article by David Sarasohn at Oregonlive.com: Ready for National Pie Day? Here’s where to go for your piece.

Unlike some other American holidays, which require elaborate fireworks or parades, National Pie Day can be celebrated with only a fork. Portland has a deep dish of places to celebrate, and the number has recently been rising.

The article includes information on special Pie Day deals at local coffee shops and bakeries, including Random Order Coffeehouse (1800 NE Alberta), Baker & Spice (6330 SW Capitol Hwy), and Pacific Pie Co. (609 SE Ankeny).

Also taking place Saturday, January 23rd:

Snuggie Pub Crawl The 2010 PDX.FM Portland Snuggie Pub Crawl

Apparently Snuggie Pub Crawls are all the rage. Those in Chicago and San Francisco have received media coverage, and there’s even a website dedicated to the events, www.snuggypubcrawls.com (blog is here), which lists dozens of past and future Snuggie pub crawls throughout the country.

The Groove Movement Fundraiser for Haiti, with Chervona

Join The Groove Movement this Saturday, January 23rd at the Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne) for a benefit for Haiti earthquake relief.

Chervona headlines, one of my favorite local bands since I saw them perform at last summer’s Polish Festival.

Then on Sunday, January 24th:

Celebrate Robert Burns‘ birthday with the Portland Revels‘ Winter Pub Sing at the Lucky Labrador Beer Hall (1945 NW Quimby)

From 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Lucky Lab Beer Hall, [the Portland Revels will] sing songs from the Scottish tradition of work songs, lullabies, children’s songs, songs of love and of Bonnie Prince Charley. Songs like “The Work of the Weavers,” “Sae Will We Yet,” “Loch Lomond,” “Broom of the Cowdenknowes,” “Bonnie Dundee,” ” Mairi’s Wedding,” “Dumbarton’s Drums,” and many others. All songs will be led and there’ll be chorus sheets so no one’s left out.

Behold the Golden Spurtle

Yesterday morning Heather and I made a pilgrimage to Bob’s Red Mill in Milwaukie, Oregon to behold the Golden Spurtle. The prestigious Golden Spurtle trophy, as you no doubt know, is awarded each year to the World Champion of Porridge Making, which just two weeks ago was won by Matthew Cox, representing Bob’s Red Mill.

Visit the Bob’s Red Mill blog for an exciting account of How the Americans Won the Spurtle.

Visit Mile73.com for Heather’s riveting account of our first ever visit to Bob’s Red Mill, Breakfast Is Going To Make My Dad Yell At Me.

And click the image above to behold the Golden Spurtle in all it’s glory; i.e. at 2292 by 1566 pixels, FTW!
