OMSI After DarkThe theme of the next OMSI After Dark is Sweet! The Science of Sugar. It takes place Wednesday, March 30, 2011.

Treat yourself to childfree, brain-building science fun at OMSI After Dark! Check out live demos, new featured exhibitions, and old favorites. Sample tasty snacks and sweets along with beer and wine, and talk to regional food and beverage artisans about the science behind them. The OMSI Cafe will be open with a special dinner menu and cash bars will be available for those who want more than just a taste! It’s geeks gone wild!

Featured science demonstrations and activities include Peeps in Space (involving the Easter treat and a vacuum) – Sugar Flare (setting candy on fire!), Sugar Glass Blowing (with Chocolate Craft Studio), performances by the Wanderlust Circus, a special themed dinner menu in the OMSI Cafe, and more!

Hours are 6pm to 10pm. Admission is $10 for nonmembers (free for members). You can buy tickets online, or at the door (no reservations necessary). 21 and over only!

Tulip Fest 2011

Tulip FestTulip Fest 2011 at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm in Woodburn kicks off Friday, March 25 and runs through Sunday, May 1 May 8th!

What, exactly, is a tulip fest? On weekdays it’s 40 acres of blooming tulips (and daffodils), a cafe, country store, farm equipment on display, Dutch sausages, and a gift shop. And on weekends you get all that, plus pony rides, a crafters market, Mexican food, wooden shoe making demonstrations, steam tractors, entertainment, and beer and wine!

Heather and I were pleasantly surprised last year at how much fun visiting a tulip farm could be. Check out her review, with lots of colorful photographs, at Mile73.com: Tulip Fest.

Various special events are scheduled on weekends during the festival run. Check out the Field Report for updates on the bloom and field status.

Wurstfest 2011 (February 12-13)

Dust off your Lederhosen, starch up your Dirndl and join the happy folk in Mount Angel for two fun days of celebration in honor of the WURST!

WurstfestWurstfest: A Mount Angel Celebration of German Sausage returns to Mount Angel for a third year.

Wurstfest was dreamed up in 2009 by the Bavarian-phile merrymakers in Mount Angel, Oregon, home of Oregon’s largest Oktoberfest celebration every fall. Heather and I attended the inaugural festival and enjoyed it immensely – it’s just like Oktoberfest, but in the winter.

Mount Angel area sausage makers present their best wursts at the fest, authentic German beers are on tap, and regional wines and Bavarian glühwein is available. Entertainment includes Oktoberfest-style music and dancing.

The fest takes place at the Mount Angel Community Building (500 S Wilco Highway) on Saturday, February 12 and Sunday, February 13. Hours are Saturday 11am until 11pm, and Sunday 11am to 5pm. Included in the $10.00 adult admission fee is a souvenir glass Bavarian beer mug (for first 2000 attendees). Kids get in free with an adult until 9pm.

This will be your last chance to celebrate in the old beer hall! Demolition of the Biergarten and construction of the new Mount Angel Community Center begins shortly after Wurstfest.
