The Timbers, as you’ve no doubt heard, are back from California and back to training. Coach Spencer thinks the team is still miles off, but that’s why they keep training. Curious what a training session is like? Check out the Dropping Timber and Stumptown Footy coverage.

And check out the latest (yesterday!) PGE Park renovation photos at The Nerd is the Word.

The Portland Timbers marketing efforts continue collecting accolades, this time from Seattle!

A-League Chairmen – can you make the A-League great? by Art Sapphire at The Roar

Yes, the football in the A-League has improved over the last six seasons. However, off the pitch and in the stands, the A-League is a becoming a shipwreck, navigated by a blind crew with a broken compass.

I will be using the example of the Portland Timbers as evidence to support my findings. The Portland Timbers are debuting in the MLS this season as the 18th franchise. [more]

Choosing an MLS Team by Chris Ballard at Match Fit USA

So….(looks at notes)…That means I am down to two teams: Seattle and Portland. I hadn’t expected there to be two teams remaining, to be honest. I almost kicked out Seattle at point 2 because I didn’t think Qwest Field was a ‘soccer’ stadium but upon closer examination it had been designed with soccer as well as football in mind, so I guess that is close enough [more]

The Gaffer: What Kind of Coach is John Spencer? by Ryan Gates at Stumptown Footy

I was looking at our roster and was wondering who would be the most influential in terms of the teams’ style of play. The only name that really jumped out at me was Kenny Cooper. Then it hit me: at first the most influential person would be the coach. I admit this should have been obvious but like most fans I was really focused on our players. [more]

The Oregonian: Heather Finds Love, Portland-Style

February 10, 2011 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Heather and meMy wife Heather (who writes at Mile73.com!) spoke to journalist Jennifer Willis recently about finding love in Portland. The article was just published!

Is finding love in Portland a breeze, or is this city a black hole of dating?

For Heather Strom, finding love couldn’t have been easier.

“I came to Portland without a job, without knowing anybody, without having a place to live,” says Strom, who moved to the city in January 2008. “I didn’t know a soul.”

Read the rest of her story of romantic good fortune (if I do say so myself!), at OregonLive.com:

Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (8-February-2011)

February 8, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersThe Portland Timbers visit the LA Galaxy tonight in their second ever exhibition match as an MLS team – check out the match preview at Dropping Timber. Friday night in their first ever exhibition match as an MLS team the Timbers drew 1-1 with the Ventura County Fusion.

Unfortunately that first match had a casualty: Bright Dike, who ruptured his achilles tendon. The good news is that his surgery was successful and if all goes well with his recovery he could be back on the pitch in 6 to 9 month.

Also in player news, the Belfast Telegraph reports that the Portland Timbers are trying to lure Northern Ireland international Jamie Mulgrew stateside.

Soon we’ll all be able to plan our summers, as the MLS has finally declared the 2011 MLS schedule will be released on Thursday, February 10th.

At PGE Park the seats and the turf are being installed, which is a good sign because, for what it’s worth, SBNation declared PGE Park the #1 MLS Stadium “situation” for 2011.

Oregon Public BroadcastingOregon Public Broadcasting‘s lineage begins in 1922, when as part of a physics experiment at Oregon Agricultural College in Corvallis, KFDJ-AM radio began broadcasting.

Eventually KFDJ became KOAC, which began television broadcasting in 1957, and the Portland flagship KOAP first broadcast television programming on February 6, 1961.

KOAP broadcast from Portland State University with a transmitter at Council Crest. In 1989 KOAP became KOPB.
