Science Pub Portland: Earthquakes in Oregon

January 17, 2016 by Dave Leave a Comment

OMSI Science PubOMSI presents Science Pub Portland: Earthquakes in Oregon on Tuesday, 19 January 2016 at the Empirical Theater at OMSI (1945 SE Water Ave.).

In the Pacific Northwest of the United States, the Juan de Fuca plate is being subducted under the North American Plate at the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The lecture will discuss the hazards of and the preparedness for ground shaking, liquefaction, landslides and tsunamis along the subduction zone. What are the differences of recurrence intervals for large earthquakes on the northern and southern margins?

Much of the region was not thought to be an earthquake region so earthquake building standards are fairly recent. How does the chance of crustal, plate and subduction quakes affect building codes, emergency preparedness, siting of critical facilities, building of bridges, and transportation corridors in the region? What have we learned from recent subduction quakes around the world that can be applied to the Pacific Northwest? What can the region expect after a large quake?

Presenter Scott Burns, PhD is a professor Emeritus of geology at Portland State University.

The Portland Science Pub takes place monthly at the Empirical Theater at OMSI. Check in at the theater entrance (doors open at 5 PM) – there’s a $5 suggested admission. OMSI’s restaurant Theory, and the Empirical Cafe are open and you can take food and drinks into the theater with you.

Parking is free for the event, but consider taking the streetcar or any of the multitude of buses that cross the Hawthorne Bridge (eastbound/westbound), which has stops a few blocks from OMSI.

November 12, 2015 by Dave Leave a Comment

We’ve entered the lull between the end of the big Fall festivals and the holiday season – when the weather turns to crap and folks aren’t quite ready to start hanging the mistletoe. This is a good time for indoor activities like drinking beer and watching movies!

BelgianFest 2015

Bailey's Taproom BelgianFest 2015Tired of IPAs? No? Well I am – which is why I’m heading to Bailey’s Taproom (213 SW Broadway) on Saturday, 14 November. It’s time for the annual BelgianFest 2015.

“As any beer snob worth his candi sugar knows, the gamut of Belgian styles is a veritable who’s who/what’s what of the best in beer. With exceptional esters derived from unique yeast strains, Belgian brews evoke flavors that break the mold and redefine the concept of everyone’s favorite beverage.”

Film Screening: 16mm Orphan Film from Oregon’s Classrooms

OHSIn October 2011 Indiana University in Bloomington acquired over twelve-thousand 16mm film prints from the state of Oregon. From sheep shearing and venereal disease to the finer points of how to tie-dye these films span over sixty years of audio-visual education in Oregon. What value do these films hold for audiences in 2015? Why did they end up at a major (out of state) university film archive? These questions and more will be tackled as we bring some of these films back to Oregon for their first public screening in decades.

NW Filmmakers’ Festival

NW Filmmakers' FestivalHarnessing and celebrating the best of Northwest film is both the Film Center’s responsibility and joy. As we continue to grow as a fresh and vital institution for the study and celebration of regional film, we’re compelled to keep up a constant search for new filmmakers, new work, and new ways the Film Center can bring artists and audiences together.

As we’ve discovered over the past 42 years, Northwest filmmakers continue to create engaging and progressive work that provides a guarantee of ongoing innovation year after year. Our task is to create a showcase that captures the vibrancy and variety of the cinematic art being created across the Northwest. We invited Steve Anker to help us shape this year’s selection and we hope his discriminating vision, heart, and mind add to your enjoyment of the program.
