Portland Poutine Turns 2!

October 18, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

Foster Burger PoutineFrench fries. Cheese curds. Gravy. We have much to learn from Canada.

Two years ago Heather and I launched Portland Poutine. The site is our homage to Portland versions of Canada’s curious culinary treat, poutine.

In the past year we’ve discovered, and reviewed, several new poutines. Most recently we stopped in at Foster Burger to try a couple poutines – the regular menu now features six different varieties! Last February, we finally made it to Gravy during a weekday lunch hour to try their gravy fries – which are not on the weekend brunch menu. In November we were delighted to discover that the new Hawthorne Hophouse offered poutine with the tastiest vegetarian gravy yet.

And stay tuned! Several poutine purveyors are on our list, including Bunk Bar‘s Fries w/ Debris Gravy and Bunk Cheese, and the Gravy cheese fries with italian pork sausage gravy at the Sunshine Tavern. Whenever a new bar or restaurant opens in Portland my first query is whether or not they offer poutine.

Thank you for reading, and please consider offering your own reviews – we accept contributions!

Foster Burger Adds Poutine to the Menu, We Review It

September 28, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

Foster Burger PoutineHeather and I made a special trip to Foster Burger (5339 SE Foster) last weekend to check out the new menu (pdf). Normally a restaurant’s launch of a new menu wouldn’t dictate our weekend plans, but this was different. Foster Burger now offers six kinds of poutine!

Heather filed the review this afternoon:

You know what makes a poutine even better? When you don’t have to share it. Among the half dozen selections on Foster Poutine’s new menu (pdf), I was happy to just get the original, no frills poutine with fries, curds and gravy.

Dave got the Arleta Poutine, Foster Burger’s take on the traditional poutine Galvaude with roasted chicken and peas. I’m sort of not into peas. But Dave will pretty much put peas on anything. ANYTHING. So he was in pea poutine heaven. We each had our own plate and I ate every last bite.

Canada!

Hope your Canada Day (or Fête du Canada, Dominion Day, Le Jour de la Confédération, or Canada’s Birthday) is fantastic – celebrate with a poutine!

Poutine Challenge at The Original: A Dinerant

Poutine Challenge at The Original

The Original: A Dinerant (300 SW 6th), local purveyor of fine poutine (breakfast version too!), presents the Poutine Challenge:

With a fanfare of trumpets and tympanic rolls, The Original invites Portland’s dining public to take The Poutine Challenge.

The goal is to fully eat five full pounds of French fried potatoes, cheese curds and brown gravy. And you have just 30 minutes to clean your plate.

Think your appetite is up to the challenge? If you complete the challenge you earn bragging rights and a commemorative t-shirt, and your poutine is free! If you fail the challenge, you can still claim bragging rights of a sort, but you have to pony up $39.95.

Visit The Original blot for more information, including waiver form details . . .

Portland Poutine Turns One!

October 19, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

Quietly last week (because I forgot) Heather and my first collaboration, Portland Poutine, reached a milestone – the one year anniversary of its launch!

In the past year, for our dear readers, Heather and I (often accompanied by friends) have eaten and reviewed poutines from over a dozen restaurants, mostly in Portland, but also in Los Angeles and Seattle. We’ve also made and shared our homemade poutine recipes, traditional and “healthy”. Through diligent googling we’ve found and featured poutine related music and games. We were the very first guests on Cascadia.fm‘s Savor Portland, and Portland Poutine was featured in The Oregonian and The Globe and Mail in Toronto, Canada!

There are a few more poutines in Portland we haven’t tried yet, and we intend to re-review others (and get better photographs in some cases) – so stay tuned, thanks for reading, and consider contributing your own reviews to Portland Poutine!
