Ghastly Northwest Tales: A Historic Halloween (31 October 2013)

October 29, 2013 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Ghastly Northwest Tales: A Historic HalloweenKick Ass Oregon History presents Ghastly Northwest Tales: A Historic Halloween on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at the Jack London bar (basement of the Rialto, SW 4th and Alder).

Master of ceremonies and resident historian Dough Kenck-Crispin will reveal Rotten, Vile Yarns of the Pacific Northwest, including tales of Satanic ritual cult murders of the dark and perpetually rainy Pacific Northwest.

Guest historians Joe Streckert and Finn John will discuss creepiness inherent in seemingly uncreepy spaces… the tragic tales of a water spanning structure, and more . . .

And what would a KAORHST event be without a little Burlesque Dancing? The evening will also feature delightfully dark dancing by local ecdysiasts Sophie Maltease, Fleur de Sel, and Hyacinth Lee. The trio will be presenting burlesque full of both tricks and treats fitting for All Hallows’ Eve.

The evening also features a costume contest with fabulous prizes and dancing thanks to DJ NoN of Decadent 80s fame.

And holy shit, there’s going to be a mime, Bennett the Artist.

Doors open at 8 pm. Admission (i.e. the suggested donation) is a mere $6. The Jack London is 21 and over only.

Dave Knows Portland ButtonToday, June 22, 2013, is the 6th anniversary of my very first blog post here at Dave Knows.

Though the blog hasn’t exactly been going gangbusters this past year (you can thank these little guys), it is still limping along. In fact this post you’re reading right now is #3000 [Ed.: Holy shit!].

Thank you for reading over the years, and please do stick around – I still have some blogging left in me!

The Great Flood of 1894 (18-June-2013)

June 18, 2013 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Kick Ass Oregon HistoryJoin the Kick Ass Oregon History crew on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 for their 2nd Year Anniversary Party at the Jack London Bar (529 SW 4th) – and a presentation on the Great Flood of 1894, when the Willamette reached its all time Portland high water mark.

It was two years ago that Terry, who runs the show at The JLB, approached The Resident Historian and said, “I Googled Danford Balch and your podcast came up. So, do you want to come down to my new/ old timey bar and talk about The Hanging Danford Balch?” (Cause Terry is IRL all geeked out on Danford Balch) And The Resident Historian responded with a resounding “Fuck Yeah!!” This seems like something we should celebrate, yeah?

There will be booze, and cake of course! The edification and fun begins at 7:30 p.m. Entry is free. Visit OrHistory.com for more details.
