Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 5 #5: Strip Clubs and Speech in the Beaver State

KAOH 5.5Kick Ass Oregon History is the latest series of podcasts from the enthusiastic historians behind ORHistory.com.

And volume 5 #5 just dropped: Strip Clubs and Speech in Oregon.

In which we learn that being naked and shaking your money maker can mean whatever you want it to, according to the Oregon constitution.

The brains behind this Kick Ass project are the crack hustlers of Oregon History Doug Kenck-Crispin and Andy Lindberg. Doug is a graduate student studying Public History and Pacific Northwest History at PSU, and Andy, though a Portland native, is currently working as an actor in New York City. Doug does most of the research and writing for the podcasts with input from Andy, who voices the broadcasts with a thespian’s flair.

The Kick Ass Oregon History podcast covers just the good stuff: Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll and Earth Shattering, Devastating Destruction.

Ultimately, our goal is to take Oregon History out of the hallowed halls of the academy, get folks excited and enthused about this shared history, and get them out into the state, digging it and experiencing it. Get them to embrace it, and get their boots muddy in the process. It’s all OUR History; nobody owns it.

Financial Planning Day (6-October-2012)

The City of Portland and the Financial Planning Associations of Oregon and SW Washington bring you Portland Financial Planning Day this Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the Portland Building (1120 SW 5th), second floor.

Dozens of Portland Area financial planners will be offering free one-on-one counseling and seminars on budgeting, income taxes, investment strategies, mortgages and foreclosures, retirement planning and more. The advice will be offered on a “no strings attached” basis – planners will not be giving out business cards or selling financial products or services.

Portland Financial Planning Day is free and open to the public, and runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Online registration is available at www.FinancialPlanningDays.org/Portland, but walk-ins are also welcome (registration hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). Oregon Archives Crawl (6-October-2012)

Archives Crawl 2012The 3rd annual Oregon Archives Crawl takes place Saturday, October 6, 2012.

Crawlers begin at any of the four host locations:  Portland Archives and Records Center, the Portland State University Millar Library, Multnomah County Central Library or the Oregon Historical Society.

At each site you’ll encounter archivists, historians and other representatives from organizations that devote their time to preserving the past so that it will be available for you and future generations to use. Not only will you get to visit the archives of the four host locations, but the other organizations will be bringing some of their “stuff” for you to see!

Pick up your free “passport” at any host location, and make sure to get stamps as you crawl from site to site.

This year we are paying tribute to the 100th anniversary of Oregon women winning the right to vote by highlighting women in history. Through the crawl, you will learn about the contributions and impact of women on Oregon politics, health, education, culture and more. Attend a presentation; learn some tricks for preserving and researching your family’s history; peruse old photos, maps and documents; or take a behind-the-scenes tour to see where all this history is stored.

At each site also hosts other participating local archives and heritage organizations. Over two dozen organizations are participating in this year’s Archives Crawl, including the Lewis and Clark College Watzek Library, Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center, the Multnomah County Records Program, the Portland Police Historical Society, and more.

The archive crawl runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Anyone interested in history is welcome at the archive crawl – you don’t have to be a history scholar.

Bring your fully stamped passport with you to the After Party at the Al’s Den at McMenamin’s Crystal Hotel (303 SW 12th) and enter a drawing for items donated by participating organizations. Relax and chat with archivists, historians, and you fellow history buffs while enjoying live music. The party runs from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and is open and free to the public – but bring money for McMenamins’ food and beer!

Tuesday Night Free Lecture: The History of Silver Falls (2-October-2012)

The Jack London bar (basement of the Rialto, SW 4th and Alder) hosts a free lecture most Tuesday evenings. Free to get in, but must be 21 or over – there’s a full bar!

The topic of the installment this Tuesday, October 2, 2012 is The History of Silver Falls:

Join us as Zeb Larson discusses the history of Silver Falls, Oregon’s largest State Park. Intriguing history of logging, entrepreneurship, and the government (via the National Park Service) deeding 6000 acres of land to help create a recreational park.

Created by local writer Don Van Kirk last September, Authors in Pubs is a First Monday event that aims to give local writers a chance to share their work, and receive feedback. The shows run about two hours, but visitors are encouraged to arrive early and stay late to talk with authors and peruse their books.
