March 7, 2001: Portland Trailblazers Retire Clyde Drexler’s Number

March 7, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

BlazersLargerClyde “The Glide” Drexler entertained Portland Trailblazer fans with his acrobatic flair and scoring prowess from 1983 until he moved on to his hometown Houston Rockets in 1995.

With Houston Clyde promptly won an NBA championship, something he couldn’t quite pull off in Portland, though the team made it to the NBA finals in 1990 and 1992. Other Portland greats on the two finals teams were Terry Porter, Buck Williams, Jerome Kersey, Cliff Robinson, and the late Kevin Duckworth.

Clyde Drexler retired from the NBA in 1998. On March 7, 2001 his number, 22, was retired during a ceremony at the Rose Garden Arena.

He now works as the color commentator for the Rockets.

The Dave Knows Portland Trailblazers 2010-2011 Preview

October 17, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

Portland Trail BlazersWelcome to the 4th Annual Portland Trailblazers Season Preview at Dave Knows Portland. Normally I would now proceed to provide my analysis of off season moves, speculate on rookie potential, and provide a wins and losses prediction for the new season. But I have a confession to make, I haven’t been paying attention. What with the Portland Timbers final season in the USL and, oh, my wedding, I didn’t spend much time this summer considering the Trailblazers. But fear not! My brother Steve, the biggest Blazers fan in Elko, Nevada, is on the case – here are his thoughts:

I’m excited about the new season. There has been a lot of offseason drama, like always. Jeff Pendergraph tore his ACL, Wesley Matthews is overpaid, Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla haven’t recovered completely, Brandon Roy and Andre Miller hate each other, and Rudy Fernandez is sad. But I think all that’s done is reduce expectations and give the team a little bit more of an “underdog” feel to them. I’m optimistic about this season, but not quite as excited as I have been in the past. I’m hoping for 50 wins, any more than that would be icing on the cake. If the Blazers don’t make the playoffs, I think McMillan gets fired. Just what I think.

And in any case, Go Blazers!

Biggest Trailblazers Fan in Elko, Nevada?

May 28, 2010 by Dave 1 Comment

My brother Steve and his family moved to Elko, Nevada a few years ago. But despite keepin’ it rural (as the tagline of his blog succinctly puts it), he has stayed true to his Portland roots in at least one way: he’s a huge Trailblazers fan.

As I’ve mentioned before, he secured a personalized license plate as soon as he moved to Nevada: BLZRFAN. Well recently he and his wife bought a second car, so of course they needed to get another personalized license plate declaring their allegiance:

Steve is also an entertaining (if infrequent) blogger at the confusingly named blog Dave Knows: Elko. And though he only started Twittering recently, he’s a natural; follow him at @ElkoSteve.
