After an acceptable sleeping-in period, besides watching bowl games, what else is there to do on New Year’s Day?
I know I’m not the only one who doesn’t give a rat’s ass about American Football.
Places to Go
The Burnside Powell’s Books (1005 W Burnside) is open 10am to 9pm. And unlike on Xmas day, all the other locations are open too.
If you haven’t yet gone to see Samudra, the Oregon Zoo is open 9am to 4pm.
Most movie theaters and bowling alleys are open too.
Food and Drink
Looking for an open restaurant? Follow this thread on PortlandFood.org: Who’s open on New Year’s Day?
It’s customary for many bars and taverns to close on New Year’s Day to recover from one of their biggest days of the year.
But as was the case on Xmas, quite a few bars and taverns are open (e.g. the Rialto, hotels bars, many sports bars, and bowling alleys). And a bonus for those who don’t like to come home from the bars stinking like an ashtray: the smoking ban begin January 1st.
As I find more things to do on New Year’s Day I will update this post!

I’m going to go for a walk around the Waterfront and the Eastbank Esplanade (suitably dressed, of course). I want to watch the river while it’s running high from the snowmelt and rain.

I can’t believe smoking has been allowed in Portland all this time. I’m very disappointed. Here I thought Portland was this amazingly healthy, progressive city. Tsk, tsk. We haven’t been allowed to smoke anywhere indoors for yonks. On the upside, you actually have stuff to do on Jan. 1st besides sitting around the house in your pajamas

reader – Hope your walk was enjoyable; it rained all day! When the river is running high with eddies swirling with debris, it is an impressive sight!
XUP – Oregonian sympathies simultaneously possess progressive and libertarian streaks; I’m a bit surprised smoking did finally get banned here!
