Postseason Timbers tidbits for Thursday

November 1, 2007 by Dave Leave a Comment

TimbersThe 2007 Portland Timbers went out with a bang Sunday night, but the news doesn’t stop. Merrit Paulson continues testing the MLS-to-Portland waters, Gavin Wilkinson pursues a contract and prepares for next year, and John Canzano continues his clichéd asinine anti-soccer bloviating (but don’t worry, I won’t link to that).

Who do you hate more, John Canzano or Roger Levesque? Follow up on Canzano’s foibles, PTFC v. Toronto FC (4-1 vs. Canada’s Clowns)and the Levesque debate. Interviews with Gavin Wilkinson, Bryan Jordan and Roger Levesque. Canzano was nowhere to be found. Score one for Roger, at least he talked to me. Music by The Pixies and KISS.

The Timbers will be more active, and together, than in any previous offseason. Coach Gavin Wilkinson says the players will have a couple of months off before they regroup informally to train once or twice a week. Not everyone will be back or is under contract, of course.

Portland Beavers and Timbers owner Merritt Paulson hasn’t taken long to try a shake-up of the two minor-league teams he bought last spring.

And commenting on that . . .

I like that Paulson answers the question, “Why do we need an MLS team when it’s already a professional team?” by mentioning the economic and cultural benefits to the City and region. Not enough people think about what a Club can mean to a city when it becomes part of the community.
