Biscuits [and gravy] aren’t for sharing*

November 11, 2007 by Dave Knows 10 Comments

Biscuits and gravy (b&g) are not hard to find. In fact, they’re ubiquitous. But Portland’s best?

Candidates

Arleta Library (5513 SE 72nd) claims to have Portland’s Best Biscuits-n-Gravy.

Slow roasted pork loin comes thinly sliced, nestled between two sweet potato biscuits and smothered in rosemary sausage gravy

They are pretty damn good, but the best? I would label them the best non-traditional b&g I’ve tried. Sweet potato biscuits though, that’s kinda weird (though delicious).

For typical ginormous portion, diner white and fluffy sausage gravy-style b&g I strongly recommend Kelly’s Olympian (426 SW Washington). Kelly’s Olympian’s b&g (a full order contains your calorie needs for the weekend) and a Bloody Mary chased by a pint of Old Speckled Hen are the perfect hangover cure, look it up.

The b&g of Overlook Family Restaurant (1332 N Skidmore) is a solid choice too.

Honorable mention

For a Chinese-American variant of b&g, you can’t go wrong with the Maple Leaf‘s (7129 SE Foster) breakfast egg foo young. When I lived in the neighborhood I used to frequent the Maple Leaf, an amazingly undiscovered gem out on 72nd and Foster, home of inexpensive American and Chinese food and great service. Last time I visited you could get a massive portion of the breakfast egg foo young and a constantly re-filled coffee for under $5.00.

Not quite

Apologies to vegans, but Paradox Cafe‘s (3439 SE Belmont) vegan biscuits and gravy are inedible. It’s impossible to make good biscuits without butter and/or cream. My ex used to make a fantastic non-vegan vegetarian b&g, however (Gimme Lean Sausage Style is a remarkable thing).

In my sights

I’ve tried the vegetarian b&g at Gravy (3957 N Mississippi Ave), but haven’t tried the regular ones yet, so I’ll withhold judgement there. Their vege b&g is second only to my ex’s. (But the best use for their vegetarian gravy is in the gravy fries!)

After seeing this post, and photo, at altportland I’m looking forward to trying the b&g at Podnah’s Pit.

The write up about The Tin Shed Garden Café (1438 NE Alberta) on PortlandFoodandDrink.com also has me salivating:

. . . solid, down-to-earth stuff like biscuits and gravy, done very well. And that’s the word of two former Southerners. The biscuits are crunchy around the edges, fluffy in the middle, and if you prefer, they also have apple wood-smoked bacon gravy.

Inexplicably I have yet to patronize the Tin Shed.

The best?

One of the highlights of my nascent blogging career was locating poutine in Portland. So I’m optimistic this post will pay dividends. Help me find the best b&g in Portland!

*Overheard on the 4 Fessenden a few months back. I didn’t catch the context, but the sentiment is clear, and irrefutable.

‘Zers get big win, stay undefeated at home

Blazers!Heading into the Rose Garden last night I didn’t expect much from the Blazers. They’re my team, but the Mavs are an elite team with some of the best in the league: Nowitzki, Terry, Stackhouse, Howard (Josh; sorry Juwan!). The young Blazers have been looking good at home, but was there any way Aldridge’s smooth shot, Roy’s creativity, and Joel Przybilla’s sieve-like hands could possibly beat the Dallas Mark Cubans?

The fans holding up the German flags and wearing blue 41 jerseys were in for a disappointing evening. The Blazers played surprisingly good defense; Dirk and company’s inability to move the ball well on offense combined with bad shooting meant they would have to rebound and play tough defense to stay in the game. They got the rebounds, but the Blazers’ offense had a special night.

By the middle of the 3rd quarter it was clear the Blazers weren’t intimidated by the mighty Mavs. Roy played an astounding game. Aldridge rebounded well and made his shots (to which we’ve become accustomed). Outlaw struggled early but made some big shots in the second half. The point guards impressed (though I’d still trade them all for Chris Paul!).

But what I found most remarkable was the pretty, patient offense. After several years focusing on Zack Randolph’s postgame, it’s a relief and a pleasure, as a fan, to get back to a good passing offense. Every player on the team gets involved, and gets shots too. The Blazers play an unselfish, beautiful game (when it’s all clicking like last night).

A guy I used to work with, before we we got the #1 draft pick I might add, promised a ‘zer championship in 2010. I think he’s on to something.

LumberJax fans: Who do we hate?

November 6, 2007 by Dave Knows 5 Comments

LumberJax

A couple weeks ago I posted about the 2008 season’s resurrection. Rick from Beerdrinker.org posted a salient comment:

any tips for which game someone new to the sport…solid rivalries or whatnot?

Who are our rivals?

Which teams, players, or coaches do real LumberJax fans hate?

Please post comments!

After a few tough games, coupled with the playoff loss to them in 2006, I would nominate the Arizona Sting as our biggest division rival. But alas, they have ceased operations in 2008 (but with plans to return in 2009).  Who should we shower with hate this season?

Photo blogs of Portland

November 2, 2007 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Portland Ground is a good place to start, but the 2nd bloggiest city in the country also hosts many other fine photo blogs (phlogs?).

I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorites below, with brief descriptions.

Blue Ruin
A Portland photo blog.
Sly slices and bits of buildings with prominent sky. Portland grays and earthy colors predominate, yet there is a brightness to the photos. Occasional portraits, usually with similar background elements.

PDX around
“It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such – such beautiful shirts before.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald

A glimpse into the fashion world. Portland’s beautiful people.

Pin-ups from Portland
(despite the word pin-up there is only occasional nudity)
No common theme, just lots of photos of things, places, and people. There used to be lots of cat photos, but thankfully that has subsided.

Portland Building Ads
Close-ups and across-the-street contemporary photos, frequently juxtaposed with decade old photos of the same signs and buildings.

Portland (OR) Daily Photo
An individual’s part in the global City Daily Photo Blog
Periodic changes of theme. Some of the best fall leaf photos I’ve seen. I especially like this one.

Mama & Me from PDX
Same photographer and some of the same photos as above, but also some exclusives.

Honorable Mentions

Portland Hamburgers
I’ve mentioned it before as a food blog, but also a collection of hamburger and other food photos from Portland and beyond.

true stories: life in portland
I used to like this one for its almost daily postings and amazing variety, but alas, it hasn’t been updated since August, and the last photo is of a squished squirrel.
