A bittersweet Timbers opening day

April 17, 2008 by Dave Leave a Comment

Timbers!Come to PGE Park tonight and see grown men cry.

Of course you know already that the Portland Timbers kick off the 2008 season tonight at PGE Park. But this match also marks the retirement of the iconic Timber Jim.

Allison Andrews has posted a series of excellent and heartfelt articles in homage to Timber Jim at The Timber Mill:

  • Part One: May 11, 2001: The Day the Timbers (and Timber Jim) returned
  • Part Two: August 29, 2003: An evening for Clive and Jim
  • Part Three: Hannah Serrill
  • Part Four: The pole comes down, and Timber Jim retires

The match against the Puerto Rico Islanders starts at 7pm. Pre-match drinking commences whenever your local opens. Prepare for an epidemic of the Brown Bottle Flu Friday.

On that note, Bob at The Offside provides newbies (and not so newbies) with A Fan’s Guide to Attending Portland Timbers Games.
