Philadelphia’s City Paper takes a tour of Portland’s food scene

September 4, 2008 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Portland has “the greatest chef culture in the country,” declared hipstery food star Anthony Bourdain* last year, in an interview with Nick Norlen for Philadelphia’s City Paper.

This was sufficient to inspire another City Paper writer, Drew Lazor, to make the trip to Portland.  And he blogged his account: Philly kids in PDX: An eater’s guide to Portland, Oregon.

What does he think of Portland’s rank as a great chef’s city?

Is it really the greatest chef’s city in the nation? I’ve never been one for blanket superlatives — but I strongly suggest you book some plane tickets right now.

The recap of the visit covers plenty of brewpubs and good restaurants, and the Great American Distillers Festival.  He goes gaga over our street food, and makes the spot-on observation that Stumptown Coffee is “hilariously snotty.” It’s definitely worth a read.

* Here’s a sample from the No Reservations episode wherein Anthony Bourdain visits Portland and checks out some cooks’ tattoos. Alt.portland reviewed the episode here.

Portland TimbersGo to the Timbers Offside blog for live updates from PGE Park, where Merritt Paulson, owner of the Portland Beavers and Portland Timbers, City Commissioner Randy Leonard, and PSU’s athletic director Torre Chisholm are holding a news conference to discuss plans to bring Major League Soccer to Portland.

In coordination with the press conference two websites have been launched with details about the effort:

  • MLS to Portland

Camping close to town with no reservations for the last time (this summer)

September 3, 2008 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

The first time we camped this summer, the weekend after Memorial Day, we expected crowds but had the rain soaked Spruce Run campground to ourselves.

The second time we camped this summer, the weather was beautiful and we left early on Friday, but were supremely fortunate to snag the last available campsite at Green Canyon.

So did we reserve a campsite for Labor Day Weekend, the weekend that strikes fear into the hearts of all no-reservation campers?  Of course not.  We had a fool-proof plan to procure a no-reservation spot at Beacon Rock.

So how did we end up at Panther Creek?

My Omnivore’s Hundred

September 1, 2008 by Dave Knows 8 Comments

I stumbled upon this on Via Je Mange la Ville. It’s the Omnivore’s Hundred, a list compiled by the blogger Andrew at Very Good Taste. It consists of . . .

100 things that I think every good omnivore should have tried at least once in their life. The list includes fine food, strange food, everyday food and even some pretty bad food – but a good omnivore should really try it all

Here’s what he wants us to do:

1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment here at www.verygoodtaste.co.uk linking to your results.
