XUP – Each ballot is addressed and mailed out to particular voters; you only get one. You fill out your ballot, sign it, put a stamp on it, and mail it back in. Or you can skip the stamp and drop it off at various ballot drop locations that are set up the weeks leading up to the election day.
It is truly a beautiful process. Unfortunately we still haven’t received anywhere near the voter uptick we should have. But we’re still ahead of most states by a long shot – I’m mostly sure. 🙂
Adron, VF – I do kinda miss the feeling of civic involvement one derives from actively heading down to the local polling place, standing in line, getting your ballot from the old lady at the table . . . but it’s also a pain in the ass! It’s nice that in Oregon, at least, they’ve made it *easier* to vote.

What other states than OR have vote by mail? Anyone know for SURE about this? I live in OR too and love the ease of voting at home-OR also has the “right to Die” law which is always voted in when put to some one’s test-OR let’s voters/adults run their own lives.

Vote by mail does leave some openings for fraud. Dominating spouses watching as their mate votes. Ballots of the elderly or unwell filled out by someone else such as caregivers or relatives. Even with these examples of possible problems vote by mail is still better than having the new electronic voting machines which provide a terrific platform for fraud.

Seriously? You vote by mail???

XUP – Yeah, a few years back Oregon went entirely vote by mail . . . so far so good!
XUP says
How does that work? How do they know you’re who you say you are? How do they prevent people from sending in thousands of votes each?

I think it is a great system! I have never known what it was like to have to go in somewhere to vote!
