A visit to New Deal Distillery

November 16, 2008 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

The highlight of our visit to New Deal Distillery open house Saturday was tasting the yet-to-be-released chocolate vodka.  From what we gathered it will be called Mud Puddle, and will be available in spring.  The warm buttery elixir was poured from a masking tape labeled bottle into clear plastic sampling thimbles. It smells of cocoa and is not sweet.  We ran into Markovitch from Tasting & Complaining, who recommends mixing it with New Deal’s searingly hot pepper-infused vodka, Hot Monkey.  A Muddy Monkey perhaps?

Loft Organic Liqueurs also took part in the open house.  New Deal partners with the Emoryville, California based company to produce the first certified organic liqueurs in the U.S.  The real fruit flavored and agave-syrup sweetened liqueurs are limoncello-inspired. My favorite flavor was the Spicy Ginger. The tangerine-cello tasted of real fruit. We also sampled the lemon grass and lavender varieties.

Meat Cheese Bread and Saint Cupcake provided the perfect snacks to accompany our booze foraging.

November 15-16: Beer, Booze, and Cheese

November 14, 2008 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

This weekend celebrate the essential food group trifecta; beer, booze, and cheese!

Saturday

Hair of the Dog The Hair of the Dog 15th anniversary dock sale is this Saturday, 10am-4pm at the brewery (4509 SE 23rd Ave).

The Beer Here has the details:

Alan Sprints’ anniversary dock sales are true events in the Portland beer world and his 15th anniversary on Saturday should be a true party with tastings of some very special beers and the opportunity to buy cases of beer that won’t be available anywhere else…remember, though: just one case of Cherry Adam from the wood per customer…

After you’ve scored your stash of HOTD delights, head on down to New Deal Distillery (1311 S.E. 9th Ave) for their open house.

From 1pm-5pm Saturday, take a distillery tour, sample some spirits (be very careful if samples of the infamous Hot Monkey Vodka are offered!), and enjoy treats from Saint Cupcake and Meat Cheese Bread.

Sunday

Steve’s Cheese (2321 NW Thurman Street), home of the best selections of cheese in town, and also the best logo in the cheese mongering business, is hosting a third anniversary party. Pacific Northwest Cheese Project has all the details:

Steve’s Cheese in Portland will celebrate its third anniversary on Sunday November 16th from 12-5pm. Join Steve Jones, cheesemonger and proprietor, along with a supporting cast of cheesemakers, chocolate makers and food artisans for this annual cheese extravaganza and whoop it up in support of local cheese and artisan products. Libations will be served up by Square Deal Wines.

Fall Timbers Tidbits

November 7, 2008 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersThe Portland Timbers have been getting some off-season press lately:

MLS2PDX: meetings in NYC – (by the Timbers Army’s own Mark Evans) Portland Mercury’s Blogtown, PDX

Seeking Help to Bring an M.L.S. Team to Portland – New York Times

And LAist’s Galaxy: Season Recap says nice things about former Timber, and rising star, Bryan Jordan:

Rising star, forward Bryan Jordan shows a lot of promise. The Southern California native played in eight games after being recalled from the Portland Timbers late in the year. Jordan brought energy and passion whenever he played, demonstrating qualities that are probably best described by the term Cobi-esque. An energetic player, not only did he figure on the offensive side, he also more than contributed on the defensive side. In short, he is the type of player that adds character and personality to a team. Attendees at the town hall meeting appear to recognize his efforts, at one point chanting his name. Arena has previously commented that Jordan is talented and brings a lot of energy to the team, seemingly agreeing with public opinion. More important, it may indicate that fans will get their wish and see Jordan in Galaxy blue-and-gold once again next year.

New site raises awareness of TriMet ticket machine problems

November 7, 2008 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Most regular or semi-regular MAX riders are aware of the problem. At some stations some or all of the ticket machines and/or ticket validator don’t work.

Hadley Price has had enough. The website he’s created, Trimetdown.com, draws attention to the problem of broken TriMet ticket machines, and looks for a solution.

The mission of [the] site is to bring the failure of these ticketing machines into public awareness, allow citizens the opportunity to provide comments and ideas and to have TriMet respond appropriately and responsibly. Having 10 to 15 frustrated officers converge upon a train full of passengers and just writing tickets is not the answer. However, [Trimetdown.com] intends to help find the answer.

KGW website has a story about his efforts: MAX rider’s website exposes broken machines.
