Gourmet Magazine loves Portland Waffles

April 22, 2009 by Dave 4 Comments

gourmet_logoLast November Gourmet fawned all over the Portland restaurant scene.

This time it’s more specific – Giovanna Zivny investigates waffles in the City of Roses:

Waffles are big right now in this city. Cooks are turning out yeasted Liège-style waffles with bits of caramelized pearl sugar baked inside; classic versions with maple syrup; and fun new combos like bacon, Brie, and basil.

Update: Portland photographer Thomas Boyd, who took some of the photos used in the article, writes about working with Gourmet Magazine on his blog.

Hm, if the weather holds, I’m thinking I need a field trip to the Waffle Window on Saturday…

The mind. It boggles. So many waffles for one city! And yet, to my astonishment, there is no waffle and beer pairing! Whaddup wit dat? Someone’s asleep at the wheel here. What could be better than salty waffles and beer? My mum used to make salty waffles which we’d eat with a big salad of fresh stuff from the garden. Only an ice cold brew would have made that meal more perfect.

Mary Sue – I live mere blocks from the waffle window but have yet to visit. Bad me! Any recommendations there?

SauceSupreme – I have no idea?

XUP – Oooo, you might be on to something . . . I don’t think anyone’s done the beer + waffle thing yet!
