April 10-11: A less hoppy Spring Beer and Wine Festival

April 9, 2009 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

Spring Beer and Wine FestThe Spring Beer and Wine Festival is here again, and this time it’s not just hoppy, hoppier, hoppiest. That’s according to Brewcrew member Noel Blake, who talks about this year’s beer list at The Beer Here:

I am impressed with the Spring Beer and Wine Fest line-up this year. Even though there aren’t any one-off beers brewed specially for this fest, there are a lot of interesting seasonals. It’s testimony to the amazing variety and creativity of today’s beer scene. I think the hop harvest problems last year spurred an increase in innovation – looking more often to malt and yeast for flavor profile. Belgians are the new IPA’s – not that hoppy beers have gone away (thankfully). But it is no longer just hoppy, hoppier, hoppiest.

If Belgians are the new IPAs, I’ve died and gone to heaven!

The fest is at the Oregon Convention Center (777 N.E. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd), which is a smart move given the likely spring (i.e. wet) weather, but I just don’t like that place – it’s sterile and cavernous; I generally like my beer drinking venues open air or womb-like. Oh well. The hours are noon-11 pm, Friday and Saturday. Admission is $5, but you can get in free from noon-2pm both days. $5 for required tasting mug or $8 for souvenir glass, beer tokens are the standard $1 each.

The Old Town sign compromise

A compromise has finally been reached regarding the Old Town sign – it’ll look like this:

Oh wait, that’s my preferred design. Sigh. Here’s what the city of Portland, Ramsay Signs, and the University of Oregon have agreed upon:

Portland: Not so bad when the sun comes out

Some say Portland is an unhappy place, but clearly they haven’t visited on a sunny day:

Remember why we love living in Portland? Oh that’s right – days like today! I never cease to be amazed that so many people (myself included!) rough it out for nine months for the glory of a Northwest summer.

Rediscovering Portland – Our PDX Network

Today was perhaps one of the most beautiful days in Portland ever. Of course, I tell myself this every time it is sunny and in the mid-70s here. Nothing is better than Portland on a sunny day.

Rose City Heresy: Stumptown

April 7, 2009 by Dave Knows 30 Comments

It’s easy to gripe about the surly service – hire a hipster to sling your coffee and you’ll get hipster-style service from them. But that’s not a Stumptown exclusive; it’s the case with virtually all of this city’s independent, non-family run, coffee shops. My problem with Stumptown is that their coffee is truly awful. I don’t drink much espresso. I drink black coffee. Stumptown prepares their coffee in a french press. It sits in the pot for too long (perhaps because the staff is busy striking poses and snarling at customers, or maybe because the music’s so loud they don’t hear the bell on the timer) so it’s over extracted and bitter. The mess is then transferred to air pots. The bilge spewed from the air pot is bitter, sour, luke-warm, and gritty. All of this leads me to believe that they don’t give a damn about the coffee.

The Portland Building’s rooftop

The original plan included much more dramatic decorative garlands along the sides of the building and a collection of public arcades and shops on the rooftop.
